Filipino Traditions in Welcoming the New Year

In welcoming New Year, we Filipinos are not just celebrating it, there are traditions we practice which are anchored on our beliefs to have a prosperous New Year.

That’s what makes the New Year’s Eve more exciting for me. I really don’t know what’s with those traditions but in our house they are strictly obeyed when celebrating New Year’s Eve. And I would just end up saying – wala namang mawawala kung susundin.

By the way, what are those traditions that Filipinos are observing come New Year’s eve?

I have listed some them below:

Making Loud Noises

Trumpets (they’re hot items during this time), pots, pans, whistles, car horns, fireworks. There are beliefs that the noise that these things bring drive away evil spirits and other bad elements.

Food

No, you are not just going to serve food during New Year’s celebration. I believe that most of you are obeying traditions when it comes to preparing foods. Just like preparing 12 or 13 kinds of round fruits, each fruit represents one month in the coming year and the round shape is believed to bring good luck for that month.

Polka Dots, Etc.

There’s a belief that wearing clothes with polka dots will bring lots of money.

You should open all your windows, doors and lights during New Year’s Eve, to invite good luck in your home.

There’s also a belief that you will not be short of money if you make sure that your pockets and wallets are filled with coins and bills when you welcome the coming year.

Oops, there’s more I know, you can them up here by leaving comments below. 🙂
