Endemic Sea Snake of Taal Crater Lake Faces Extinction Threat

Taal Lake, known for its unique and isolated ecosystem, is home to one of the rarest sea snakes in the world—Hydrophis semperi, or the Taal Lake Sea Snake. This elusive creature, also called Garman’s sea snake, is one of only two true freshwater sea snakes known to science. It exists nowhere else on Earth but in the volcanic crater lake of Taal in Batangas, Philippines.

Once sharing the lake with bull sharks and now cohabiting with endemic species like maliputo and tawilis, the Taal Lake Sea Snake is a biological anomaly. Unlike most sea snakes that thrive in saltwater, Hydrophis semperi has adapted to the freshwater environment of this inland lake—making it a species of global scientific interest.

Conservationists warn, however, that this rare reptile is facing an alarming decline. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the species as vulnerable, citing pollution, habitat disturbance, and climate change as growing threats to its survival.

“If you want to see one, rent a kayak or a small boat and paddle around the lake,” wildlife advocate Gregg Yan told Esquire Philippines. “Wait quietly. You might just see it rise for air. But please—don’t touch it. Just watch from a distance and appreciate its quiet, Slytherin-like grace.”

With its mysterious beauty and extreme rarity, the Taal Lake Sea Snake serves as a reminder of the fragile wonders that live in the Philippines’ most iconic lake—and the urgent need to protect them.
