LIPA CITY, Batangas — To boost local livelihoods and promote food safety, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)–Batangas, in collaboration with the City Agriculture Office of Lipa, held a two-day training on Coconut-Based Products Processing and Basic Food Hygiene on June 10–11, 2025, at the Lodenian Women’s Club RIC Processing Area in Barangay Lodlod.
A total of 33 coconut farmers and Rural Improvement Club (RIC) members participated in the training, which featured hands-on workshops on producing high-value coconut products like coconut jam, macapuno preserve, coconut syrup, coconut juice, and coco chips. The processing technologies were developed by the Institute of Food Science and Technology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (IFST-UPLB) and were demonstrated by Dr. Joel P. Rivadeneira, University Researcher III.
The program also included a seminar on basic food hygiene, led by Renalee L. Reyes of the DOST-CALABARZON Food Safety Team. Topics covered food safety laws, compliance with the Food Safety Act of 2013 (RA 10611), and the benefits of food safety systems for small-scale producers.
City Agriculturist Engr. Lorelie A. Villa Del Rey commended the initiative, highlighting the importance of science-based training in supporting rural development and sustainable agriculture.
This activity is part of DOST Batangas’ ongoing efforts to advance science, technology, and innovation (STI) in the countryside, with a focus on strengthening agri-based livelihoods.
