Two Tanaueno athletes are set to make history this November as Lord Aragorn de Vera and Efril Ian Mercado join the Mumbai Cobras for the inaugural season of Baseball United, the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia.
De Vera, a shortstop from De La Salle University, and Mercado, an outfielder from the University of the Philippines, will be the first Philippine-born, locally trained players to compete in an international pro league. Both have represented the Philippine national baseball team and hail from Tanauan City, Batangas, a baseball hotbed.
They will be joined by veteran coach Vince Sagisi, who takes on the role of bullpen coach for the Cobras. Sagisi described the milestone as a breakthrough for Philippine baseball, saying it proves that local talent can reach the professional stage.
