Nasugbu Releases Over 280 Olive Ridley Hatchlings to Boost Marine Conservation

NASUGBU, Batangas — In a continued effort to protect marine biodiversity, the Nasugbu Tourism Office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) successfully released 283 Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings at Nasugbu Beach Park Pavilion over three batches this January.

The releases began on January 11 with 62 hatchlings, followed by 92 on January 12, and 129 on January 16. The initiative underscores Nasugbu’s commitment to conserving coastal wildlife and raising public awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species.

Olive Ridley turtles, locally called pawikan, play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. They help maintain healthy seagrass beds, contribute to nutrient cycling, and support the overall biodiversity of coastal areas. Their presence in Nasugbu’s waters is also an indicator of a thriving marine environment, which benefits local fisheries and tourism.

The joint effort between the local government and MENRO emphasizes the role of community involvement in environmental stewardship. Residents and visitors were encouraged to witness the hatchlings’ release and learn about the threats pawikan face, including poaching, habitat destruction, and marine pollution.

Public response on social media has been positive. A netizen commented:
“Good job, Nasugbu! Sana po ay may mga paalala, tulad ng tarpulina o poster sa tabing-dagat o baybayin, upang ingatan ang mga pawikan. Please respect sa mga pawikan at huwag paglaruan, iuwi, o saktan ng mga haragan ang mga pawikan, lalo na kapag papasok sa dagat. Nagmamalasakit lamang po.”

Through these releases, Nasugbu continues to reinforce its dedication to marine conservation, ensuring that Olive Ridley turtles thrive in Philippine waters for generations to come.
