On this day last year, the 12th of January, Batangas and its environs felt the wrath of Taal Volcano—an eruption that brought fear, sleepless nights, and days of agony.
Looking back, 2020 was a year no one wished for. The violent eruption that left hundreds of thousands devastated was followed by a pandemic that shrouds the entire world until this very moment. Indeed, 2020 is a year that we’d rather forget, if we can.
But one beautiful thing that we need to highlight as a takeaway from what happened is the selflessness that is truly embedded in the heart of every Filipino. Here we witnessed the remarkable bayanihan—an outpouring of help coming from every corner of the country; and the heroism of frontliners who continue to fight off the unseen enemy.
Disasters, global pandemic, tragedies. Fear knows no year. But one thing is for sure, faith fights fear. What happened exactly one year ago awakened every Batangueño’s brave heart. We acknowledge vulnerability as humans. Whatever challenge that may befall us, it is comforting to know that we have each other’s back.
“Tapang at giting ng isang Batangueño ay palaging mananatili.”
