Coal-Fired Power Plant, Soon to Rise in Calaca, Batangas

Listed Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp. yesterday revealed the plans to build a 135-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Brgy. Putting Bato West, Calaca, Batangas.

Trans-Asia, the power unit of the Philippine Investment Management, Inc. (Phinma) group, is planning to conduct the consultation in line with the review by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the proposed plant’s environmental impact assessment report. That report is needed to secure an Environmental Compliance Certificate from the DENR.

According to reports, the Trans-Asia earned P37.2 million for the third quarter of 2009 after posting a net loss of P78.9 in the same period in 2008.

Moreover, the company’s trading revenues grew to P417.8 million in the third quarter of 2009 from P202.4 million in 2008 due to higher energy sales and power rates.

Trans-Asia also plans to aggressively pursue wind power after being granted 10 wind energy service contracts by the Department of Energy. The 10 wind service contracts represent an aggregate capacity of 227 MW.

The capacity is over half of Trans-Asia’s 400-MW long-term capacity target from wind power in 38 sites all over the country.

Among the company’s proposed wind energy projects is the San Lorenzo Wind Project in Guimaras, which is expected to be operational within the next three years. It will have a total capacity of 54 MW, to be done in phases. The first 8 MW is due in 2012.

Four wind power assessment studies are being conducted by Trans-Asia in Cagayan Valley and Guimaras.
