What the Philippines could have been without the EDSA Revolution?

What could the Philippines had become if the first EDSA revolution did not prosper?

I was born a few months before the People Power Revolution in EDSA happened. Probably, I was just beginning to grasp things with my tiny hands and started eating semi-solid foods when the whole country unite to throw the dictator out of his seat.

Last night, I saw the video of ABS-CBN music artists’ rendition of Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo – one of the most memorable songs that marked the democracy of the Filipinos. And then my dad started sharing a few notes on how it was 25 years back.

Dad says people started marching on the streets on February 22. The People Power Revolution also termed as EDSA Revolution or the Yellow Revolution was characterized as “prayerful” and “nonviolent” revolt against the Marcos regime. It was a revolution that changed the lives of the Filipinos. A revolution that brought back the democracy in our country. A revolution that ended a suppressing leadership. A revolution which influenced other revolutions in the world.

Since then, the EDSA Revolution had been part of classroom discussions in History, Political Science, Law, etc. It associated heroism to the names of Sen. Ninoy Aquino and Pres. Cory Aquino. The generations that followed after the 1986 revolution was thought to become more outspoken. And there are too many revolts brought to the streets which all tried to change a thing or two in the ruling administration.

Back to the question posted above. What could the Philippines had become if the first EDSA revolution did not prosper?

In a Yahoo! article posted earlier, Sen. Bongbong Marcos expressed that his dad could’ve turned the Philippines into another Singapore.

Who could have replaced Ferdinand Marcos after his death? Could the Marcos regime have continued with another Marcos in power?

We might come up with various answers to these questions but one thing’s certain – a different history to be told.

After 25 years, all we want is a transparent and honest government who would bring a positive difference to the lives of the Filipinos. We need not to be another Singapore or any other country. Because of the gift of independence, the Philippines is a nation with the capabilities to grow on its own.

The EDSA Revolution thought the Filipinos that if we become united, we can truly make a difference. As part of a nation struggling for stability and development, I hope the lessons learned on that heartfelt and patriotic February 26 of 1986 would not just die out.
