The Meaning of Palm Sunday and Life’s Uncertainty

This day officially starts the Holy Week 2011. What Holy Week means to each one of us may vary only in the way we choose to spend it.

Palm Sunday reminds us of God’s entering in Jerusalem by riding a donkey. During those times, a donkey symbolizes peace while a horse symbolizes war. Christ was welcomed by the people who laid down their cloaks and small branches of palm trees.

We hope you attended Palm Sunday mass today. It’s one of the most important Sundays in a year. By the way, where do you usually put your palm leaves or ‘palaspas’ after being blessed? Our parish priest said it’s better if you put your palaspas by the door to keep you reminded, especially on days when you’re frowning, that God is always around and has succeeded coming to Jerusalem in peace — let Him enter your home as well.

While everyone commemorates Palm Sunday, the Philippine showbiz industry was rattled by the shocking news of ABS-CBN Star Magic talent AJ Perez’s untimely death. AJ, or Antonello Joseph Sarte Perez in real life, died due to multiple head injuries when the van he was in collided with a Partas bus. AJ was 18.

Have you realized how precious life is? AJ was at the peak of his career. This 18-year-old talent was just beginning to make his star shine brighter when this saddening event occurred, leaving many hearts broken.

Life is too short. And it never gives us certainty. How you choose to spend your life is your prerogative. Live life to its fullest but along the way, try to find the meaning or the essence of your existence. We are created to live here on earth with a purpose. And that makes life an ultimate adventure.

May you rest in peace, AJ. You will be missed.
