September 21, 2009 is a Non-working Holiday

September 21, 2009, Monday, is the end of Ramadan and is declared as a non-working holiday.

The Philippines, with a majority Christian population, recognized Eid ul-Fitr as a regular holiday by virtue of Republic Act No. 9177 signed on November 13, 2002. The law was enacted in deference to the Filipino Muslim community. Also, the RA was created to further promote peace among major religions in the Philippines. The first public holiday was set on December 6, 2002.

Meanwhile, the Islamic holiday of Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan and the first day of the following month, after another new moon has been sighted. The Eid falls after 29 or 30 days of fasting, per the lunar sighting. Eid ul-Fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast; a special celebration is made. Food is donated to the poor (‘Zakat al-Fitr’), everyone puts on their best, usually new, clothes, and communal prayers are held in the early morning, followed by feasting and visiting relatives and friends. The prayer is two rakaahs only, and it is optional (waajib) prayer as opposed to the compulsory five daily prayers. Muslims are expected to do this as an act of worship, and to thank Allah (God). source

INC Executive Minister Erano Manalo succumbs to death at 84

erano-manaloMillions of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) members grieve upon hearing the news that their Executive Minister Erano “Ka Erdie” Manalo died on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 3:53 p.m. The news of his death was announced a day after by INC spokesperson, Bienvenido C. Santiago, to give Ka Erdie’s family a time to mourn privately.

Thousands of people continue to draw to INC’s Central Temple in Quezon City to pay their last respect to the late church leader. Politicians, celebrities, and INC members from all walks of life gathered together to be one with Ka Erdie’s family in this very low moment of their lives.

Ka Erdie was considered as one of the greatest leaders of our country. He was not only followed by the INC members because of his church authority but also because he was a father to the entire INC community. For the church members, it was hard to forget the teachings that Ka Erdie imparted throughout the years. Some say that grief is an understatement to describe the feeling of loss they are having now.

Ka Erdie was the fifth son of INC founder, Felix Manalo and his second wife Honorata de Guzman. After his father passed away, Ka Erdie served as the Executive Minister of INC on April 23, 1963 until his death. It was because of him that INC reached overseas and was also the one who built the Central Temple that serves as the main headquarters of the church.

During the elections, aspiring government officials would come to Ka Erdie to ask for support from him and his members. INC is considered a strong unified force during the election period because whoever Ka Erdie thinks should be elected, the whole INC community would follow.

Ka Erdie was married to Cristina Villanueva in 1955 with whom he has six children – Eduardo, Felix Nathaniel, Marco Erano, Lolita, Erlinda, and Liberty. It was cardiopulmonary arrest that ended Ka Erdie’s life. He succumbed to death at age 84.

Erano “Ka Erdie” Manalo’s death is indeed a great loss not just for the INC community but also for the whole nation that is in constant search for an honest, unifying leader among his people.

SSS claims financial stability

Amid the controversies of pre-need companies being bankrupt, the Social Security System (SSS) expressed assurance to its pensioners and members of its financial stability and that they have enough funds to last until 2030. This is according to Corazon Balagbis, SSS Batangas City manager, in her recent interview with Barangay Frontline.

This assertion is to ease the worries of SSS members and pensioners that the agency might suffer insolvency and the burden will be put on their shoulders. Balagbis claimed that SSS is stable and they should still feel secured for the agency still has the capability to give salaries and housing loans to its members and sustain pensions for its pensioners.

Furthermore, SSS will be on its 52nd year of service on September 5, 2009. The celebration will be divided into three parts: pensioners’ day, family day, and sports fest of its employees.

To end, the SSS office was transferred from C. Tirona St. to the National Highway in Alangilan, Batangas City.
