This Christmas holiday, another sea tragedy hit the Philippines. This time, an inter-island ferry carrying 80 people sank off Batangas waters near Isla Verde.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in its 3:30 p.m. bulletin on the incident, said 6 casualties have been recorded after MV Baleno 9 sank in waters off Verde Island in Batangas.

Calapan Port terminal supervisor, Danny Asedillo, identified 5 of the fatalities as Jenny Cabral Mutia, 36 of Socorro, Oriental Mindoro; Lealyn Penaranda, 20 of Pola, Oriental Mindoro; Angelica Balanza, 8-months old baby; Jennilyn Gutierrez and June Panagsayan.

Sixty-two passengers have been rescued, while 20 people remain missing, according to the PCG bulletin.

October 23, 2009 was a festive day in SM City Lipa when the mall vicinity was flooded with different colors of costumes worn by adorable participants from three private elementary schools in Lipa. The SM City Lipa United Nations Day celebration was attended by students from De La Salle Lipa, St. Mary’s Montessori, and Ages and Stages Learning Center.

The Event Center was transformed into a huge palette of hues, beaming with smiles of enthusiastic graders and their proud parents. The Parade of Nations started at around 2:30 in the afternoon. The students walked through the mall area, leaving the mall goers and store tenants with cheers as the participants show off their beautiful UN costumes.

After the parade, the students returned to the Event Center where the contest proper was held. Among the judges were Jun Magana, veteran pageant judge and Director for Student Affairs of Lipa City Colleges; Mary Ann Llamas, Miss Lipa Tourism 2008 1st Runner-Up; Janine Hernandez, Lipa-based fashion designer.

The students went by batch on stage as the judges took closer look of the contestants in their costumes. It was such a joy taking photos of these students. And I could feel the happiness of the proud parents, seeing their children being adored by the audience. They were indeed a bunch of lovable kids; their innocence overflowed.

But still, winners must be chosen in the end. The school with most number of students in UN costume was De La Salle Lipa. The over-all winner of the Best in UN Costume Award was Ms. Honduras (DLSL); Boy with Best UN Costume was Mr. Poland (DLSL); Girl with Best UN Costume was Ms. Honduras (DLSL).

Romelyn Manset Macasaet of De La Salle Lipa topped the certified public accountant (CPA) licensure examinations given by the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Accountancy this October.

Romelyn tied up with Ivan Rhett Villacampa Macabeo of Bicol University in the CPA licensure exams with a score of 91.71 percent.

According to the PRC, a total of 2,888 out of 6,929 exam-takers passed the CPA board.

Meanwhile, the PRC announced that the registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card and Certificate of Registration will start on Monday, October 26, but not later than November 13, 2009.

For those registrants, please bring the following:

1. Duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal
2. Current Community Tax Certificate (cedula)
3. 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete nametag)
4. 2 pieces 1″x1″ picture (colored with white background and complete nametag)
5. 2 sets of metered documentary stamps
6. 1 short brown envelope with name and profession.

Registrants will pay the initial registration fee of P600 and annual registration fee of P450 for 2009-2012. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the roster of registered professionals.

The oathtaking ceremony of the successful examinees will be held on November 18, 2009, 1 p.m. at the plenary hall of the Philippine International Convention Center, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Registration for membership with the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants Inc. will start on Monday, October 26, 2009.
