Worlds Longest Painting on Continuous Canvas: The Inauguration

The Province of Batangas, the country’s focal culture locale for the month of June, host twin ecological events on June 25-28: the Climate Change Teach-in Day and the World Environmental Day convented by Climate Change Commission led by Secretary Heherson Alvarez and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Chairman Vilma Labrador with Executive Director Malou Jacob hosted by Batangas Tourism headed by Director Pancho Lardizabal.

The Event inaugurates the longest painting on continuous canvas with a single theme – water and fishes – organized bythe On The Spot Artists’ Association (OTSAA) of the Philippines headed by award-winning scenographer Rollie De Leon, Assisted by Lapian ng mga Alagad ng Sining (LAPIS) with the support and participation of the 17 regional offices of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) headed by Malcolm Sarmiento.

The event culminates with the inauguration of the painting, awarding certificates of the declaration of the province of Batangas led by Gov. Vilma Santos Recto and Vice Gov. Mark Leviste as featured province for the month of june, and signing of the letter of agreement for a comprehensive creative communication plan for climate change at the livelihood center building in Port Area, Batangas City.

Conceptualized to become the longest painting on continuous canvas, the first 100 meters of the painting was launched in Quezon City on February 205. Since then, hundreads of meters had been added through the years, until it became 5000 meters long.

Over the weekend, about 2000 artist have been taking part in painting another 2,000 meter long canvas to bring the total length of the painting to 7,300 meters in a bid to clinch the Guiness World Record on longest continuous painting on canvas. By then, over 6,000 artist will have worked on the painting and so many gallons of paint provided byRotary Club of Lipa, Batangas, Welcoat paint, Delta Construction Center, Rain or Shine and Silver Mold Enterprises.

Vilma Santos Recto, Heherson Alvarez, and the guestsThe event is likewise twinned with dance, music and visual arts workshop with delegates from ASEAN member nations and students from Batangas through the Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Chosen delegates from Asean Countries include Pima Iswary and Diletta Drupardi Soervo Legowo of Indoneisa; Olivia Malsawma and Maung Malsawma of Myanmar; Phin Pou Sonida and Pin Saosophea of Csmbodia; Jophel Ybiosa and Nash Anggahan of the Philippines and Doan of Vietnam. The workshops are facialized by LAPIS for the Visual arts and Wally Tuyan for dance and Frank Rivera for literary arts, video clips by Cj Andaluz and Sining Gising Team under the direction of Cecile Guidote Alvarez, UNESCO Comisioner and President of the Philippine International Theater Institute.

The event was highlighted with the Angel Hero Awards of the OTSAA artist who had saved the painting when it almost got razed by fire in November 2008.

Performers in the inauguration include Batangas Provincial Choir, Cercado Sisters, Sta. Teresa College Cherubim conducted by Robert Manalo coordinated by DepEd Supt. Dr. Emma Bautista, ASEAN Youth Delegates and Shirley Halili- Cruz Balllet Company and the pride of Batangas, Lahing Batangas Dance Troup Lyceum of the Philippines choreographed by Rodel Fronda, and the Earthsavers Dream Ensemble.

With the UNEP theme “ Biodiversity Is Life… Biodiversity Is Our Life,” the celebration incorporates an Association o Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) youth Fussion workshop on heritage and habit concerns particularly global warming phenomenon to promote bio-cultural diversity in Southeast Asia.

Batangas is the Fourth locale in the collective of sites comprising the ASEAN Culture capital of the Philippines which is the Asean Culture Capital for 2010-2011. The inaugural event was in Angeles City , Pampangga through the Clark Developmenr Corporation, which hosted the the Asean Ministrial Meeting and the festival of the Arts; Followed by Capiz which was the venue of the Dance Exchange: Second Philippine International Dance Festiaval Hosted by Governor Victor tangco; and then Santiago City, Isabela which staged the Patarraday Festival hosted by mayor Amy Navarro. Bohol through Gov. Edgardo Chatto is the Featured province after Batangas. The events were linked to the dynamism and wealth of cultural diversity in Southeast Asia centered on the UN millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
