“During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth” (Lk 1:39-40). Mary was in haste. She wasted no time to visit her cousin and come to her assistance. Let us remember that both Mary and Elizabeth were pregnant at that time. Yet Mary took all the trouble, made the long and difficult journey just to bring the good news. The good news was in her womb. It was Jesus himself she was bringing! What better news could there be after all?
Mary was in haste. She was in a hurry to bring good news. What do we often rush for? We may be too slow to bring good news, instead, we rush when we have bad news. Gossips, slandering, half truths, and the like. Too many people would not waste time to spread them. Others hurry to get pleasure from vices and worldliness. And in so doing they spend their time in useless pursuits. And they end up being bad news themselves.
Mary was in haste. She was in a hurry to help her cousin Elizabeth who was in advance stage of pregnancy. Yet Mary was pregnant too. She was pregnant with Jesus. And yes, she was pregnant also with what Jesus stands for: mercy, kindness, gentleness, helpfulness, availability for others, self-giving, charity, and everything good and holy.
How great this woman is! Mary bears Jesus in her womb. She bears Jesus in her heart. She bears Jesus in her mind. She is indeed blessed among all women. Let her be our exemplar.
