Grandparents’ Day, a brief history

Households in the Philippines are commonly made up of extended family members, which may usually include grandparents. Filipino family members are closely knit that even after years of marriage, couples still stick to their parents and still choose to live under one roof.

Though we seem to have this very close family bond, we don’t usually celebrate this one special day called the Grand parents day. Perhaps, we have just learned about this from malls’ grandparents’ day celebrations but never did we treat this day as special as the others.

But how does this Grandparents’ day celebration started? Here’s a simple history. In 1973, West Virginia began a statewide campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. The first Grandparents Day was set by Governor Arch Moore. Through concerted efforts on the part of individuals interested in preserving their heritage, this campaign was headed by Marian McQuade of Fayette County, mother of fifteen children.

Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in this project. In 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a resolution in the United States Senate and in 1978, five years after its inception, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.

September was the month chosen, signifying the “autumn years” of life, and today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by thousands throughout the United States extending to countries like the Philippines.

On September 13, 2009, let us all make our lolos and lolas happy. This is their special day and they truly deserve more than our usual hugs and kisses. To all the grandparents out there! Happy Grandparents’ day from WOWBatangas Family.
