Belly Dancing 101: Lipa Ballet School Empowers the Woman in You!

Okay, so I am very slim and I thought belly dancing was not for me. Gerlie and I have tried belly dancing in one of our dance workouts at the gym. Oh my, I don’t even have an idea why I was able to do survive without really knowing the correct execution for we just follow, or rather try to imitate the instructor who’s way too good.

Friday afternoon, I got the chance to talk with Mrs. Ling Mercado, the one who introduce me into the fascinating world of belly dancing. So belly dancing is often interpreted as a way of seduction, or something intensified to be considered as sexual. According to Ms. Ling, belly dancing is all about women empowerment. It is a way of expressing the sensuality that is unique in every woman. Belly dancing is sexy, bold, liberating – all in a decent, and yes, healthy way.

Belly dancing has flourished over the years in almost every continent of the world. The dance has brought in conviction to women who had embraced their sensuality and femininity. Ms. Ling shared the different styles of belly dancing – cabaret, gypsy, American tribal style, goth, and tribal fusion. According to her, all these styles have basically the same steps but with different execution. Basic belly dancing steps are hip drop, chest lift, umi, and shoulder shimmy.

For those who are interested to learn the art of belly dancing, Ms. Ling is part of the Lipa Ballet School which offers belly dancing classes. In cooperation with Mckinley Hill Lipa, the Lipa Ballet School would also be offering special summer classes for capoeira and fencing.
