Batangueño Campus Journalists in the Division Schools Press Conference 2012

It was a nostalgic experience covering the awarding ceremony of Division School Press Conference (DSPC) 2012 which started on October 8 and concluded today, October 10, at Mataasnakahoy Central School.

DSPC is the third level of campus journalism competition preceded by Area and District press conferences, where student-journalists from public and private elementary and secondary levels in the Division of Batangas Province contend for the spots which will lead them to the Regional Press Con.

The venue was filled with hopefuls from all the contingents. Approximately 4000 teachers and students combined joined this year’s DSPC.

Division Schools Press Conference 2012 - Batangas (2)There were eight (8) competitions with two categories (English and Filipino) for both elementary and high school divisions. The student-journalists competed in Editorial Writing, News Writing, Feature Writing, Sports Writing, Copy Reading, Editorial Cartooning, Radio Broadcasting, and Photo Journalism.

I know how all of them were feeling as I was also into competing for press conferences in grade school and in college. Those were the days when you have to protect your competitive spirit from submitting to your fears and other negativities that arise when you compete for yourself and for the glory of your alma mater.

Press conferences in grade school and high school are different from college press cons. In grade school and high school, you have to endure the intensive training under your respective coaches, despite you being a little school girl or school boy and handle all the pressure. Then you have to stay in whatever classroom assignment your school would get from the host district, in this case, majority of the contingents spent three days and two nights in the classrooms of Mataasnakahoy Central School.

Division Schools Press Conference 2012 - Batangas (8)The pressure is bigger when you’re competing in college press cons because competition heats up among the top colleges and universities in the region. I got the chance to compete in three college press cons and I treated them somehow as vacations. Haha. The pressure was deeper in the two years that I was editor-in-chief for I have to manage one of our three school publications and make each section of it a winning section. The group competitions are more intense because that is where the schools are really beating each other hard.

Back to today’s event, if you were there to witness the awarding, you’ll be carried away by the reactions and emotions of the winners and their proud coaches. Others were surprised to hear their names called and got were not able to hold back the tears of joy and victory. There were disappointed faces but were sport enough to accept their loss.

This press con would not be possible if not for the effort of the facilitators, the host district, the parents and coaches, and of course, the campus journalists who all gave their best effort in making the 2012 Division Schools Press Conference a huge success.

Congratulations to all of you!
