Another Only in Batangas: Tawilis / Freshwater Sardines in Corn Oil

tawilis or freshawater sardines, balete batangasAside from those featured Batangas products that we have written here in WOWB, our town is also proud to have our freshwater sardines or locally we call, TAWILIS. Tawilis is the only fresh water sardines in the Philippines and can be found only in Taal Lake. The fresh water environment of the TAWILIS which is the Taal Lake, makes its body softer and tastier than the normal sardinella fish taken from the sea.
With tawilis processed into Spanish sardines, people outside of Batangas will now have access to tawilis whenever they want in a form that is very healhty and tasty as well.
The product is Tawilis Sardines in Corn Oil. The main ingredients are fresh-water sardines locally known as Tawilis processed and packaged like Spanish sardines. Tawilis are fresh water sardines in the Philippines endemic to Taal Lake. Processing the tawilis into Spanish sardines will make it available to consumers outside of Batangas ensuring the same freshness and quality as that of the fresh raw tawilis taken from the Lake.
Right here in Balete, A Farm School for girls or the Balete Family Farm School is now producing the same product the “Tawilis in Corn Oil” that comes in two varieties: Regular & Hot and Spicy.
As a way to help boost the local economy, BFFS, through the help of some experts in food processing and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), developed the bottled Tawilis in Corn Oil. The processed “Tawilis” prolongs its marketability to as long as two (2) years. A processing plant is located at the BFFS campus, Barangay Makina, Balete, Batangas.
The processed product is a livelihood project of BFFS to help finance its scholarship program which allow poor but deserving young girls to get a high school education with an entrepreneurial orientation at BFFS.
