It was early in the morning of July 21 that our team (the Communications Team: Miss D, Joel, me) and the Multimedia Team (Sir Alva, Reinier, Aris, Paul) met for our visit to Malvar Shrine located in Sto. Tomas.

Malvar Shrine or Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark is under the National Historical Commission; it showcases General Miguel Malvar’s life as depicted on the paintings, photos, and documents on display. Our visit there allowed us to get to know Gen. Malvar better, how he contributed to the Philippine History, and why the shrine is in Sto. Tomas and not in Malvar.

We stayed there for more than half an hour and after the interview with Mrs. Nelly Galicia the shrine’s OIC, we headed back to Lipa.

It’s sizzling sisig for lunch at SM City Lipa Foodcourt. The best part of the lunch? Spending GCs.

What’s next after lunch?

All of us where thinking what our next destination would be as we still have the rest of the afternoon to spend.

And then Reinier thought of this resort in Laiya called Llamar Beach Resort which he can contact. After a few minutes of debate, we all agreed to go to San Juan. We were fortunate because the owner of that resort gave us the opportunity visit their place.

From SM City Lipa, we rode Indai again and headed back on the road. It was an awesome road trip. We traced the roads with music playing inside the car, laughters filling in between gaps, and some exchanging of “banat” lines. We shared everything we could enjoy while we were on our way.

Fom Lipa City, we passed the roads of Padre Garcia and Rosario before reaching San Juan. As we go on our way, I enjoyed looking on both sides of the road because of the trees and rice fields that these towns have. Well I’m sure the whole team loved it, too.

It was about 1 hour and a half drive to Llamar Beach Resort. Though the weather was gloomy that day, the team still managed to enjoy our almost 3 hours stay in that humble yet comfortable resort. We took pictures of the resort to be used for the feature article.

Sad thing for me and Miss D, we weren’t able to swim (unpreparedness and girl thing here) unlike the boys who raced towards the beach for a good swim. However, we did enjoy eating and posing for the camera. Click.

At exactly 5PM we left the resort and headed back to Lipa.

We all went home happy and contented. Our road trip was great one. The day was filled with learning, relaxing, and strengthening a bond worth keeping.

P.S.
Thank you Aris, that road trip will not be possible (or comfortable) without your Indai.

For the longest time we thought Malvar Shrine is in the town of Malvar. Thanks to Google Map for showing us the way.

Miguel Malvar was the last general to surrender to the Americans. He was also dubbed as an Unofficial President of the First Philippine Republic. Malvar was born on September 27, 1865 in Brgy. San Miguel in the town of Sto. Tomas.

July 21, in our interview with Ms. Nelly Galicia of the Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark, we got a few more stories about the great general.

The Malvar Family

His parents Maximo Malvar and Tiburcia Carpio owned farmlands during those times. They have properties in some parts of Mt. Makiling and the land where the University of the Philippines – Los Baños is situated now was donated by the Malvars.

Malvar was only able to finish second year high school. Before joining the Philippine revolutionary forces, Malvar was a farmer, having lands to take care of. He married Paula Maloles, also a native of Sto. Tomas. They had 13 children and one of them, Dr. Isabela Malvar-Villegas is the only one living now. She’s turning 102 years old this October.

The Great Batangueño General

It was in the mid-1890s at the height of the Philippine Revolution against the Spaniards when Malvar started leading his own men. When the Americans asked for the help of General Emilio Aguinaldo and his troops, Malvar was among those who contributed much to the downfall of the Spaniards.

It was in Tayabas, Quezon where Malvar and his Batangas Brigade defeated the Spaniards, emancipating the town from the oppressors. The Philippine revolutionaries claimed victory in 1898.

A year after the downfall of the Spanish regime, the Filipino revolutionaries entered a new battle, this time with the Americans. The Philippine-American war occurred from 1899-1902.

Gen. Aguinaldo was exiled to Hong Kong in March 23, 1901 and being the right hand of President of the First Philippine Republic, Miguel Malvar took over the office from April 1, 1901 – April 16, 1902. However, his leadership became controversial as it was not strengthened by any document although he was next in command to Aguinaldo.

Malvar continued fighting against the Americans. But when the American General J. Franklin Bell lead the operations in Batangas by implementing scorched earth tactics, Malvar and the rest of his troops decided to surrender to avoid further damage to the lives of his fellow Batangueños.

Malvar succumbed to liver ailment in Manila on October 13, 1911.

Malvar Shrine Historical Landmark

Located in the compound of the Sto. Tomas municipal hall is the Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark (MHL). The shrine (and public library) is under the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. His son and former mayor of Sto. Tomas, Miguel Malvar Jr., founded the library in 1956. It also served as his office during his term.

The shrine displays pictures, paintings, and other documents depicting the life of Miguel Malvar. This is where the descendants of the general and the local town people celebrate Malvar day every September 27. We’ll keep you posted on the events which will happen with the celebration this year.

This year also marks the 100th death anniversary of Miguel Malvar.

The Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 8am-5pm. You can contact Ms. Nelita M. Galicia (Officer In-Charge) at (0918) 550-6645 if you wish to have a tour there.

How to go to Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark? Upon reaching the Sto. Tomas town proper, you’ll pass by Rose and Grace Restaurant then turn right on the corner upon seeing Jollibee. MHL is located on the left side upon entering the Sto. Tomas Municipal Hall compound.

Among the 30 candidates of Miss Sto. Tomas 2011, she bagged the title with her wit and undeniable grace that match her pretty face. Wisezel Arcillas of Brgy. San Felix is the new Miss Sto. Tomas.

The ladies were presented, I think more than twice, and looking at all 29 (one candidate did not make it for the finals night) of them, I bet the judges had a hard time giving scores. They went on stage clad with casual wear. It was a black and white themed wardrobe presentation. And the crowd went wild.

Following next was the video presentation of the talent competition held last Wednesday. Then, the girls went back on stage wearing their long gown. They were wearing a uniformly designed evening gown, only different in colors per batch. They look stunning. The pageant hosts exclaimed that the girls tonight really transformed and has all showed such sophistication.

Now, the special awards were given. And these are:

Ms. Friendship – Diosa Camille Malabuyoc, Candidate #24
Best in Talent – Jeremie Meer, Candidate #4
Miss Photogenic – Francheska Anne Balane, Candidate #6
Best in Swimsuit – Mary Rose Pujanes, Candidate #10
Best in Casual Wear – Honelyn Cypres, Candidate #8
Best in Long Gown – Mary Rose Pujanes, Candidate #10
Batangas Choice – Francheska Anne Balane, Candidate #6

The announcement of the Top 15 followed. The semi-finalists were asked casual questions based on the profiles submitted. They were given some time to breathe as the emcees acknowledge the people who contributed to the success of Miss Sto. Tomas 2011.

In the end, only five girls will remain and only one will take home the crown as Miss Sto. Tomas 2011. Below are the five candidates who emerged as winners of this year’s search for Miss Sto. Tomas.

Miss Sto. Tomas 2011 – Wisezel Arcillas of Brgy. San Felix
Mutya ng Kalikasan 2011 – Honelyn Cypres of Poblacion II
Binibini ng Mahaguyog Festival 2011 – Mary Rose Pujanesof Poblacion IV
1st Runner-Up – Marie Claire Reyes of Sta. Clara
2nd Runner-Up – Marriz Maliksi of Brgy. San Juan

It was a rainy evening last March 2, 2011 but that did not stop our kababayang Tomasinos in going to the plaza and watching their Miss Sto. Tomas candidates show their talents on stage. The WOWBatangas Team was lucky enough to be invited backstage and interview some of the nervous but excited Miss Sto. Tomas candidates.

There will always be a first time, and we were very impressed with the talent show that Sto. Tomas had from their candidates. There were Lady Gaga and Lea Salonga impressions, hip-hop and ball-room dance numbers and one candidate even dance-interpreted a popular Bamboo song. Congrats Tomasinos!

The Miss Sto. Tomas Pageant is part of the tourism drive of the Municipality of Sto. Tomas and is a key event in their celebration of the 345th Sto. Tomas Fiesta.

Unfortunately we can’t stay that much longer into the night but we’re hoping to come back on the actual pageant on March 5, 2011.

Here are some backstage pictures of the candidates and the initial program proper.

The MAHAGUYOG Festival 2011 is also part of the festivity.

December 7, 2010, SM City Lipa – Ten mini-bands signed and showed up for the Drum and Lyre Competition, one of the main events of the celebration of the 429th Founding Anniversary of Batangas. For the first time, this competition is being held outside of the Batangas Capitol in Batangas City, and this year’s host is Lipa.

At exactly 1pm, the competing mini-bands paraded from the left side of SM Lipa going to the front parking where the actual performances took place. The participating schools drew lots for their respective numbers, and it seemed from the spectator’s point-of-view that no one wanted to go first. But once call time begins, the participants, aged 6 years old to 12 year old, showed their talents in music and dancing to the audience with enthusiasm no matter what order they performed, and whether the sun was shining directly on them or there was a drizzle.

Each band was identified through their colorful costumes and remarkable musical arrangement. Some opted for rock music, while some others went for classical and contemporary. One notable performance was from one of the trainers who headbanged with their band members. Another trainer, Buddy Arnigo of Maghinaw Elementary School, Bauan, Batangas said that the preparations were not that easy in terms of the musical instruments and costumes. He was a trainer since 1994 and he speaks from experience about how easily anything from costume, to wrong notes and choreography can go wrong.

The winners were chosen based on 1) the musicality and 2) overall performance. The judges were Mr. Ambrose Azucena, Mr. Bobit Macapagal, Mr. George Cabullo, Mr. Jun Mapa, and Mr. Floy Quintos, who is the chairman of the board of Judges.

Different emotions from the contestants and parents showed all throughout the announcement of winners. Kids were already crying even before the 2nd placer was announced, and some were even hugging their fellow bandmates. Suddenly, it dawned on them that the weeks of hard practice will either be compensated or disappear into nothing in the next few minutes while the judges read their verdict.

Yesterday I included eating comfort food in the Five Ways to Enjoy the Rainy Days article. Here in Batangas, one of the common comfort foods for the locals might be the hearty beef, bone marrow soup popularly known as bulalo.

Batangas is known for this meal since the province is one of the main producers of beef all over the country. With Padre Garcia as the Cattle Trading Capital of the Philippines, the demand for the best grown cattle in the region has been sufficed not only by this municipality as there are various towns in the province which are contributing to the cattle farming industry.

Okay, let’s go back to Batangas bulalo. Main ingredients of bulalo are the beef shanks, bone marrow, and vegetable such as cabbage, potato, string beans, pechay, and corn. How to cook bulalo, I’d leave everything to you.

Can you now imagine the comfort you could get with a bowl of beef bulalo? Let the rain fall down the window pane as you take a spoonful of this soup into your mouth down to your stomach. Oh, take Batangas bulalo as the best and I couldn’t agree more.

Where can you find the best Batangas bulalo?

Batangas is lined with bulalo restaurants and all you have to do is to find them all. There’s Rose & Grace Restaurant (Sto. Tomas), Kainan sa Dalampasigan (Nasugbu), Irene’s Bulalo sa Kubo (Batangas City), and Almarius Grill (Lipa City). I bet there are still a lot of bulalo restaurants in your hometown. And with this, you know what to do.

P.S.
Don’t forget the plain rice, the patis, and the devilicious chilli.

“I have often raised my hand in the silence of the night and in my solitary cell, blessing you all and presenting you to Jesus and to our father, St. Francis of Assisi.” – St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Last Monday, I had an opportunity to visit the Philippine National Shrine of Padre Pio at San Pedro, Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Since I’ve been becoming sickly these past weeks, I volunteered to accompany my friend to go at the said shrine for a healing mass for she was looking for someone to be with her as she drove from batangas city to Sto. Tomas. When we arrived, it was announced that the mass will start at six p.m. and so while waiting, I went to see the seemingly eucharist in a glass medal somewhere near the shrine. I then discovered that it was the saint’s relics and I felt so blessed seeing it with my bare eyes.

The healing mass then started and I was deeply moved by the words of the Capuchin priest who lead us all in prayer. The homily was so inspiring and I felt like wanting to attend the next healing mass/session. Healing Mass is by the way done every 23rd day of the month at Padre Pio’s shrine in San Pedro. I likewise witness the long queue of devotees waiting for pray over. There were some young and old people in wheel chairs, I guess people from all walks of life praying and hoping to be healed from different physical or maybe spiritual illnesses they’ve been suffering from.

I found myself in tears when I whole heartedly pray for my Friend’s mom who is sick right now, and for all those people I care so much. I did’nt know exactly the feeling. It was something I really can’t explain. It felt like the tears were like God’s way of healing me… of cleansing me, each teardrop was like an agent of taking out or crying out the pains in my heart and my soul.

I hope more people would get to visit and attend the healing mass At Padre Pio’s shrine. It is just 10 minutes away from Sto. Tomas Public Market, the way one take when going to Lucena or Bicol.
