This article is contributed by Ken Michael Escamillas, a senior Mass Communication student from Batangas State University – Lipa Campus.

I define San Juan, Batangas in three words: popular, luxurious and festive. Those we’re the words that people would be certain to say after they have toured this place. Not just a place but a paradise of
wondrous panoramas surrounded by this ironic term of Festive Barakos.

And if there is one thing that we Batangueños should be more proud of, that would be the beaches. The province of Batangas is known for long white-sand beaches engulfed with vast blue seas which are evidences of rich marine biodiversity. One of the most famous beaches here lies on the eastern part of the province, the municipality of San Juan. Which I assumed also to be one of the most recognized and competitive municipalities in the province for having magnificent beaches enough to provide the tourists the accommodation beyond their expectation.

For a Batangueño like me, the beaches here give more than enough experience. Usually, my family goes here during summer. That’s why summer days are one of my most awaited seasons every year. Vacation. Moments of fun. Indulgence. These are the things I found in San Juan beaches. That’s why whenever we have getaways, San Juan is our first choice. A 2 ½ hour travel would be not that time consuming for after you have arrived and witnessed the beauty of the beach, it will all be worth it.

There’s always a smile in my face whenever I see the sea waves and hear the sound it makes. It’s relaxing. I could walk forever with my barefoot for as if I am walking on a foamy surface. I see the sunrise and the sunset with a perfect picturesque that everyone can have a perfect shot in every angles. What makes the trip even happier is the company you have. Sharing blissful moments with your family in harmony with nature is an experience that’s truly rewarding.

A luxurious haven. Beach resorts in San Juan gives satisfactory accommodation and recreation to every tourist. There are resorts and hotels in San Juan which provides world-class services such as Acuatico Beach Resort, Estrellas de Mendoza Aplaya Resort, La Luz Beach Resort. Yes, please do take note of that. But still, there are accommodations which are affordable for budget-conscious beach bums.

But there’s more to San Juan other than its white sand beach. San Juan, Batangas is also known for being festive when it comes to presenting the town’s culture, creativity, and hard work. The Lambayok Festival is the reflection of the rich cultural and economic background of San Juan, Batangas.

This is just one of the many Batangueño festivals that everyone should be proud of. The term Lambayok is a contraction of the word lambanog (coconut wine), palayok (clay pot), and karagatan (Filipino term for beach) being its prime sources of livelihood and income. This festival happens on the second week of the month of December.

Different events like street dance parade, court dancing competition, agricultural tourism fair, and the search for Mutya ng San Juan are the highlights of this festival.

I had been reading some facts about Lambayok Festival but it is far better if we could witness this festival personally. The events will surely entice people even from far places to come and visit San Juan
and see for themselves the wonders found in this town. Having this festival serves as a break-through for many opportunities for the promotion of the tourism of this town.

Along with other popular municipalities and cities in the province, or even in the entire country, I know that San Juan, Batangas has a lot of potentials that can be shown and shared to the world. And the world awaits the growth of this municipality.

Beaches and the Lambayok festival are more than true representations of how beautiful San Juan, Batangas is. These are manifestations of hard work and inventiveness which makes me more proud of who and where I do belong – the province of Batangas.

Photos of the Lambayok Festival in the second collage is from WOWBatangas.com.

It was early in the morning of July 21 that our team (the Communications Team: Miss D, Joel, me) and the Multimedia Team (Sir Alva, Reinier, Aris, Paul) met for our visit to Malvar Shrine located in Sto. Tomas.

Malvar Shrine or Miguel Malvar Historical Landmark is under the National Historical Commission; it showcases General Miguel Malvar’s life as depicted on the paintings, photos, and documents on display. Our visit there allowed us to get to know Gen. Malvar better, how he contributed to the Philippine History, and why the shrine is in Sto. Tomas and not in Malvar.

We stayed there for more than half an hour and after the interview with Mrs. Nelly Galicia the shrine’s OIC, we headed back to Lipa.

It’s sizzling sisig for lunch at SM City Lipa Foodcourt. The best part of the lunch? Spending GCs.

What’s next after lunch?

All of us where thinking what our next destination would be as we still have the rest of the afternoon to spend.

And then Reinier thought of this resort in Laiya called Llamar Beach Resort which he can contact. After a few minutes of debate, we all agreed to go to San Juan. We were fortunate because the owner of that resort gave us the opportunity visit their place.

From SM City Lipa, we rode Indai again and headed back on the road. It was an awesome road trip. We traced the roads with music playing inside the car, laughters filling in between gaps, and some exchanging of “banat” lines. We shared everything we could enjoy while we were on our way.

Fom Lipa City, we passed the roads of Padre Garcia and Rosario before reaching San Juan. As we go on our way, I enjoyed looking on both sides of the road because of the trees and rice fields that these towns have. Well I’m sure the whole team loved it, too.

It was about 1 hour and a half drive to Llamar Beach Resort. Though the weather was gloomy that day, the team still managed to enjoy our almost 3 hours stay in that humble yet comfortable resort. We took pictures of the resort to be used for the feature article.

Sad thing for me and Miss D, we weren’t able to swim (unpreparedness and girl thing here) unlike the boys who raced towards the beach for a good swim. However, we did enjoy eating and posing for the camera. Click.

At exactly 5PM we left the resort and headed back to Lipa.

We all went home happy and contented. Our road trip was great one. The day was filled with learning, relaxing, and strengthening a bond worth keeping.

P.S.
Thank you Aris, that road trip will not be possible (or comfortable) without your Indai.

Laiya, Batangas has always been a lure for beach- goers here in the Philippines. With its fine sand, and of course, Batangueno hospitality, one can’t go wrong with the offerings of Laiya.

July 21, the Communications and the Multimedia Teams of WOWBatangas, were in search for something refreshing (it was a frackin’ hot day) and we said, “Ta mag-Laiya na lang kaya?”

See, Laiya is a less-than-two-hour-drive from Lipa and Reinier knows a contact person to this particular beach resort there so “Why not?”, we told ourselves. We’ve been from Malvar Shrine, Santo Tomas after all, and we thought maximizing the fun of the day would just be logical thanks to Aris’ new found love, Indai.

And so we went. We boarded “Indai” (Aris’ car) and laughed and talked and laughed (again) our way to Laiya, San Juan.

And so we arrived.

We were welcomed by Orvil Impleo, an 18-year-old gentleman who also takes care of the place. He toured us on what I believe is one of the most comfortable beach resorts in Laiya.

Enter Llamar Beach Resort.

The resort’s name, as we have found out, is a combination of the surnames of the owners — Elsie Llana and Manny Marquez.

The Beach Front

Clear waters, fine sand, a view of Mount Daguldol and friends to share it with make the experience ethereal. Plus, some locals roam around to sell sea stuffs; I mean, we never bought one but the Daddy Octopus was a sight to behold indeed.

The Rooms

Orvil also toured us to all of the rooms. They have cottages, cabanas, apartments and dormitories which all have decent prices. The rooms range from 2-3 to 14-16 persons with prices that range from Php 1,500 to Php 9,000 — good for a gang of all sizes (and of all budgets) indeed.

All these accommodations are air-conditioned, double-size beds, toilet and bathroom. Amenities vary depending on the type of room you will reserve. Check-in time is 2:00PM, check-out time is 12:00 noon the following day.

Llamar’s Other Offerings

LLAMAR also has a pavilion that is located near the beachfront area, it is equipped with a bar and restaurant complete with tables and chairs that can accommodate up to 80 persons. The area ,too, can be reserved for private functions and events.

Affordable meals and drinks are available at the restaurant.

The resort may also do arrangements for banana boat rides, videoke machines for rent, jet skis, and other recreational activities.

We did enjoy the experience and we have copious amounts of jump shot photos to prove it.

“Why go to the beach when it’s the middle of the year?” you might ask.

It’s not that cold, my dear. Plus, the rates are down.

And more importantly, there’s no crowd of strangers. The company of your friends and the exclusivity of the surreal waters are truly felt.

Check the map insert to know how to go to Llamar Beach Resort, Laiya, San Juan. Contact details: (02) 751-9863 / (0917) 813-7799 / (0917) 532-6775.

The rainy season’s starting to make us feel its presence. But hey, summer’s not yet over until it’s over! We’ll still have our “huling hirit sa tag-init” tomorrow. Abangan!

Last weekend, May 7 and 8, I went to Laiya, San Juan with some friends and it was one unforgettable trip. Really. We went there without anticipating Bebeng. The typhoon that has entered the Philippine area of responsibility and had left 20 people (or so) dead. Bad Bebeng.

Going back to the Laiya trip. We’ve learned a couple of things on this trip. Not that it was screwed up, it was fun, fun, fun! Why? Because we have the right company to enjoy.

It was actually a trip for my two sets of friends: the Weekend Gang (composed of my ‘ancient’ friends from grade school/high school) and the Superfriends (my friends from college). Since both groups wanted a beach trip, I asked both parties’ permission to get together and have one single trip with me as the common denominator. Haha.

Let’s go down to lessons learned from this Laiya trip. And hopefully we could help you out if you plan to go there soon.

Lesson #1: Get early reservation.

We went there without an exact location to go to. We were so kampante that there would be a lot of resorts to choose from. But upon reaching Laiya, fully-booked na halos lahat ng puntahan namin! We spent about an hour scouting for a resort that would fit our budget for a cottage only. Kuripot as it may sound, we only alloted P1,000-P1,500 for the cottage.

Kasi we have a tent to keep our things safe and since it’s an overnight swimming, getting a room was not really part of the plan. But there’s no cottage that would fit into our budget! We haggled but the lowest rate was P2,000. Kabayan Resort has a cottage for P1,000 but for day tour only.

We hopped from one resort to another until we reached this so-called Baludlud Resort (it doesn’t look like an actual resort in your mind). The owner was so kind she gave us a fair deal. For P2,000, we got a cottage, a covered table, and she let us used the tent without extra fee.

Lesson #2 Budget wisely.

We did it. Since I’m the common denominator of the two groups, I took responsibility of budgeting, what to buy, what to bring, where to go to (I failed on the last one).

We rented a jeepney for P2,500 (overnight rate) which covered the gasoline and the driver’s fee. P1,500 went for the food (dinner and breakfast plus pulutan) and the beverages. Then P2,000 for the accommodation. We’re 12 in the group, our contribution was P500 each so sakto, P6000. Libre na sina driver at kasama nya.

Lesson #3. Makinig kay Kuya Kim.

Saturday before noon time, the news said that Bebeng will hit eastern Visayas and Bicol. It was too sunny when we left Lipa but on our way to Padre Garcia, makulimlim na. We have to fetch Jonathan in Padre Garcia at dun na kami simulang abutan ng ulan.

The evening prior to our trip, I wasn’t able to hear Kuya Kim’s weather forecast for the weekend and nobody in the group did the same. Kaya ayun, kasama namin si Typhoon Bebeng sa outing!

PABORITONG EKSENA: Nag-swimming ang ilan sa amin nung gabi. Ang sasaya ng mga tao. Tapos umambon. Tapos lumakas at naging ulan. Tapos, biglang nagbrownout sa buong Laiya! Nag-ahunan ang mga tao, parang pang-Survivor ang eksena.

It doesn’t matter if you avail an accommodation na hindi sosyalan. Sino bang may sabing para ma-enjoy ang trip eh “shala” dapat ang resort? We went there to enjoy the sea, the sand, and the sun (which unfortunately was hidden by Bebeng) which means most of the time will be spent outdoors.

With this Laiya beach trip, new friendships were created. And it also tested the existing friendships’ strength. Literally and figuratively, we survived a storm.

Is it because of the captivating sunset or the obvious attractiveness of the beaches down here? Batangas is one of the most popular picks of celebrities as wedding venue. Ever wondered why?

A few days ago, January 12, Oyo Sotto and Kristine Hermosa tied the knot in Club Balai Isabel in Talisay. Last month, on December 22, 2010, Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez and The Songwriter Ogie Alcasid made their dream wedding a reality as they exchange vows at Terrazas de Punta Fuego in Nasugbu. In April 28, 2009, Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo surprised everyone with their very private wedding – ceremony was held in San Juan Nepomuceno Church in San Juan and the reception was held at the other Balai in Anilao.

These are all much-awaited and much-talked about weddings. They are big stars who chose to celebrate the grandest and most special day of their lives here in our beloved Batangas. Isn’t it romantic? Hmmm… Could Batangas be tagged as the “Wedding Venue of the Stars”? ♥

Maybe because of the lovely beaches we’ve got here. Or maybe because of the privacy they could have in the mentioned places of our province. Or maybe because there’s something romantic and special here in our province that captivates these celebrity couples.

Definitely, maybe. Sounds like a movie? These are sweet realities.

What do you think?

December 7, 2010, SM City Lipa – Ten mini-bands signed and showed up for the Drum and Lyre Competition, one of the main events of the celebration of the 429th Founding Anniversary of Batangas. For the first time, this competition is being held outside of the Batangas Capitol in Batangas City, and this year’s host is Lipa.

At exactly 1pm, the competing mini-bands paraded from the left side of SM Lipa going to the front parking where the actual performances took place. The participating schools drew lots for their respective numbers, and it seemed from the spectator’s point-of-view that no one wanted to go first. But once call time begins, the participants, aged 6 years old to 12 year old, showed their talents in music and dancing to the audience with enthusiasm no matter what order they performed, and whether the sun was shining directly on them or there was a drizzle.

Each band was identified through their colorful costumes and remarkable musical arrangement. Some opted for rock music, while some others went for classical and contemporary. One notable performance was from one of the trainers who headbanged with their band members. Another trainer, Buddy Arnigo of Maghinaw Elementary School, Bauan, Batangas said that the preparations were not that easy in terms of the musical instruments and costumes. He was a trainer since 1994 and he speaks from experience about how easily anything from costume, to wrong notes and choreography can go wrong.

The winners were chosen based on 1) the musicality and 2) overall performance. The judges were Mr. Ambrose Azucena, Mr. Bobit Macapagal, Mr. George Cabullo, Mr. Jun Mapa, and Mr. Floy Quintos, who is the chairman of the board of Judges.

Different emotions from the contestants and parents showed all throughout the announcement of winners. Kids were already crying even before the 2nd placer was announced, and some were even hugging their fellow bandmates. Suddenly, it dawned on them that the weeks of hard practice will either be compensated or disappear into nothing in the next few minutes while the judges read their verdict. With their outstanding performance and uniqueness, the mini band from Lemery, Batangas (total score : 93.5) declared as the first place and received 75,000 pesos and trophy. Second place was Maghinaw Elementary School Band from Bauan, Batangas (91.5) and thry received 50,000 pesos and trophy. The third place went to first-time joiners from Tuy, Batangas(91.25) and they received 25,000 pesos and trophy.

JR got to pose with arguably the best dancer/majorette of the competition from Grand Winner mini-band from Lemery. See most of the pictures that we took just hours ago.

One of the factors contributing to the growth of the tourism industry of a town or a city is having its own festival. There are numerous Philippine festivals which are all expected to draw local and foreign tourists on their list.

Batangas, being one of the most visited provinces in Southern Luzon, has quite a number of festivals. So to give you a short list of various festivals in Batangas, I made my own top 10 festivals (which I think are the most celebrated ones) that you, as a Batangueño, should take part in. Scroll down until the no.1 spot!

10. Sinuam Festival, San Jose – Poultry industry is San Jose’s main drive for its economic growth. Being the top producer of eggs in the province and also in the neighboring areas in the region, the people of San Jose derived their festival from a dish made out of their main produce – sinuam (egg soup). Sinuam Festival is celebrated on the 25th of April (San Jose’s foundation day) and just like any other festivals, street dancing highlights the celebration.

9. Sinukmani Festival, Rosario – Sinukmani is one of the famous Filipino meriendas (I even consider this a dessert) made of sticky rice cooked in sugar (I don’t know if they have other ingredients for this). Celebrated on June 9, Sinukmani Festival is participated by local folks, preparing and decorating their own sinukmani, making them visually and gastronomically enticing. This year’s celebration was an attempt to make a world record of the longest line of sinukmani ever made.

8. Tinapayan Festival, Cuenca – I love festivals that showcase local delicacies. Tinapayan Festival puts the spotlight on the hardworking bakers or panaderos of Cuenca, the reason why the town claimed the title “Home of the Bakers”. The festival includes bread-making contests and festive parade to present the finished products of the bakers and celebrated sometime in June.

7. Walistik Festival, Lipa City – I can’t remember the last time I went to see this festival. Walistik originated from the word walis (broom) and the Tagalog slang for incredible (walastik). This festival is being done on the second week of January or as part of the celebration of the city’s fiesta, January 20. How is this celebrated? Often with a street dance competition where walis is used as the main material for the dancers’ costumes.

6. Anihan Festival, Lobo – Lobo is famous for its white sand beaches and the Malabrigo lighthouse. But it was only last year that I learned that this town boasts of abundant produce such as tamarind (Lobo is the proud producer of tamarind wine), rice, custard apple (atis), corn kernels, and buli fabrics to name a few. A street parade and dance competition are the main events of the Anihan Festival (last week of September) – the people’s way of thanking God for a bounty produce.

5. Sublian Festival, Batangas City – This is a meaningful festival as it encompasses the cultural and religious oneness of the people of Batangas City. Sublian is part of the week-long celebration of the city’s founding anniversary, July 23. Subli is a ceremonial dance to worship the Holy Cross.

4. Balsa Festival, Matabungkay, Lian – When I was little our family would always have Matabungkay beach as our summer destination before other beach resorts started sprouting. And then the people of Matabungkay came up with a brilliant idea to attract more tourists – the Balsa Festival. Matabungkay beach is famous for the bamboo beach raft or balsa. As far as I know, the festival doesn’t have an exact date of celebration but it’s always held on the month of May.

3. Lambayok Festival, San Juan – Lambayok stands for the three main products of San Juan – lambanog (coconut wine), lambat (fish net), and palayok (clay pot). We had a very unforgettable experience of this festival last year that’s why it landed 3rd on my list. Celebrated on the second week of December, the Lambayok Festival shows off the creativity and camaraderie of the San Juan folks.

2. Kabakahan Festival, Padre Garcia – Padre Garcia is a town close to my heart (hahaha) and when the team went there to celebrate with the town folks in the Kabakahan Festival last year, we had a first hand experience of the hospitality of the Garcianos. This is one of the most notable festivals in the region and I must say, another world-class event, with a Wild Wild West vibe to it.

1. Parada ng Lechon, Balayan – Why it landed on my list’s no.1 spot? Because it always reminds me of my childhood, when our family would go there to celebrate this festival with my uncle’s in-laws. I remember how cholesterol and future heart problems were ignored back then, haha. But I don’t like being soaked with water during the parade, that was before. Now, let’s bring all the water guns out! I’m looking forward to see these roasted pigs clad in different costumes for this year’s Parada ng Lechon.

So these are the Top 10 most celebrated festivals in Batangas, at least for me. Thumbs up or thumbs down? Let me know!

Tagged as the ‘poor man’s drink’, lambanog (coconut wine or coconut vodka) is an alcoholic beverage distilled from the sap of unopened coconut flower. Lambanog is famous in Quezon province and in San Juan, Batangas where coconut trees grow in abundance.

How to make lambanog?

Every afternoon, the mangangarit (the one who climb the trees to get the sap) would attach bamboo receptacles to the coconut flowers on which the sap would drip. The following morning, the mangangarit would climb the tree again to collect the bamboo receptacles with the coconut sap.

The collected sap would undergo fermentation process to produce tuba or coconut toddy. When tuba undergoes distillation, lambanog will be produced. Lambanog has alcohol content of 80-90 proof.

For marketing appeal, lambanog distillers came up with different flavors such as pineapple, cherry, mango, and even bubblegum. Lambanog has reached the foreign market making it beneficial for local distillers and to the local coconut farming industry.
