Leslie Ann Amada of Barangay Namunga is Mutya ng Rosario 2011

Batangas is truly blessed with beautiful people. And the town of Rosario is not an exception.

Otherwise the celebration of the grandiose Mutya ng Rosario 2011 wouldn’t be possible.

Twenty three gorgeous women joined the said contest—women with stand out physique and well- heeled intellect.

The candidates first wowed the crowd as they ramped the stage ala goddesses as they wore intricate violet robes and crowns of fauna.

Each candidate represented a certain barangay.

True enough, every candidate is backed up by hundreds of their ka- barangays and their support was evident on the deafening screams which were heard every time their respective bets appears.

Remarks from Elizabeth Marfe and Mayor Sandy Javier of Leyte which delved on the relevance of 324th founding anniversary of the municipality and the beauty of Rosario were given before the almost rowdy Rosarians.

Those were talks which were, I think, timely for the crowd was going gaga on screaming their hearts out. The further ados helped in taming the very eager fans.

But we were proved wrong because the next portion appeared to be the swim wear competition.

Colors of neon blue and pink effortlessly suited the bodies of the contestants.

Followed suit is the long gown competition. The contestants were elegant with Janine Hernandez’ Creations as they graced the stage with black, white and red long dresses. The contestants were also serenaded by Oliver Javier who did acoustic renditions of When I See you Smile by Bad English, Just The Way You Are and Marry You by Bruno Mars.

Announcement of the ten finalists and of the special award winners mummed the crowd as they awaited for the names of their bets to be called.

The judges are: Christine Mayor, Mutya ng Pilipinas Finalist;Sarah Jane Mercado of Ms Philippines Earth;Roger Basco, artist and educator ;and Chairman of the board of judges, Mr. Pancho Lardizabal, Tourism Officer of Batangas. Their judgement was based on Beauty of Face, Beauty of Figure and Talent.

The event was duly hosted by no less than the first Mutya ng Rosario herself, Ms. Emily Katigbak and pageant choreographer, Mr. Jun Magana.

Laurel Park which served as the event’s venue was nonetheless beautiful as the covered court was adorned with white cloths which highlighted the beauty of the contestants.

Darlene Dina, 2009 Mutya ng Rosario (the pageant is held every other year), was a bit reluctant to do the proverbial crown passing.

“Ayoko pa… nag-enjoy kasi ako saka napamahal na ako sa kanila (munispyo personnel)”, she told the WOW team half jokingly.

Darlene has also represented Rosario in Mutya ng Batangan 2009 and competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas in the same year.

The 5’’8’ beauty now works as a private nurse, a part time model in Manila, and an Ambassadress of Goodwill to her native Rosario.

But the fact that her successor is also from Namunga might have eased her emotions.

“Iba na yung magiging alaga ng taga munispyo pero nasa puso ko parin ang pagiging mutya ng Rosario” she said in her farewell speech. “At para dun sa mananalo, sana ganon din kayo ka close ng mga taga munispyo at ibigay nyo lahat ang makakaya ninyo para maisabuhay ang titulo“, she furthered.

Leslie Ann Amada will be Rosario’s representative to the Mutyang Batangan and would also serve as an Ambassadress of Goodwill of Rosario for two years.

Results of 2011 Sinukmani Festival Street & Court Dance Competition

The Laurel Gym in Rosario, Batangas was transformed into a festive court yesterday (June 9, 2011) in the Sinukmani Festival Street & Court Dance Competition.

From the soft and romantic melodies played by the Rosario West Central School Rondalla Group to the festive vibe injected by the invited drum beaters, the event venue was the most jovial place around town for that specific time of the day yesterday.

This street and court dance competition is part of the 324th Founding Anniversary of Rosario. After the judging of sinukmani entries in the Luansing Plaza, the town folks then gathered to cheer on their bets for the competition.

While waiting for the competing groups, five pretty young ladies dubbed as Diwata ng Sinukmani were presented. You can find them in the image gallery below.

The contest proper started a bit late than expected because the first competing group, Mayuro National High School, had a hard time bringing in their huge props. There were too many people inside the gym, that’s why.

The competing groups were Mayuro National High School, Itlugan National High School, Padre Vicente Garcia Memorial Academy, Sto. Niño Formation and Science School – Day Class, and Sto. Niño Formation and Science School – Night Class.

This competition were characterized by colorful costumes, confetti here and there, cheers and loud hoots from the audience, and of course, talented and high-spirited dancers who entertained everyone present.

Do you know that feeling when you’re so overwhelmed with what you see and you feel like you’re about to cry? Ang weird ano? They were all up for a good competition and we knew these kids gave it all out to provide us with such entertaining performances. Ang saya-saya ng sayaw nila pero nakakaiyak kasi alam mong pinaghirapan talaga nilang lahat.

But in the end, only one group will be hailed as the best performing group. And we’d like to congratulate Sto. Niño Formation and Science School – Day Class for bagging the first place in the competition!

Top Winners of Sinukmani Festival 2011

The rain had poured down hysterically around Batangas for the past two days. But no matter how bad the weather was, it did not stop the people of Rosario from celebrating their 324th Founding Anniversary.

Yesterday, June 9, the team drove down to Rosario for the Sinukmani Festival 2011 and the street dance competition. We’ve been to quite a number of festivals before which have similar events yet there’s always something new to look forward to.

The Sinukmani Festival 2011 was supposed to be on the street along Gualberto Avenue but due to the not so pleasant weather, it was moved to Luansing Plaza where 117 participants from the LGUs, NGOs, business and education sectors lined up their Sinukmani Festival entries.

Each sinukmani entry was not judged based on how it tastes but rather on how it was presented for the festival. The criteria for judging was 70% for presentation and 30% for the concept.

With more than a hundred of participants packed inside the Luansing Park, parang magkaka-stampede! Haha. The entries, aside from appearing na nakakagutom, were visually attractive. Rosarians are creative people and what’s even more admirable is the thought that the participants spent money, time, and effort on their entries. It paid off, applause to them.

But among the entries, only five were chosen to win (each will take home P5,000) this year’s Sinukmani Festival. The entries by the way were judged by Mr. Ruel Gonzales, DTI-Batangas Provincial Director; Ms. Brida Mendoza, Provincial Assistant Head of Planning and Development Office; Ms. Chona Andal, Administrative Officer of Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office.

Sinukmani Festival 2011 of Rosario (The Primer)

June 9, 2010 – We went to Rosario, Batangas to experience Sinukmani Festival. It was actually our first time to cover the said festival but we’re no strangers to how yummy the star of the day is. Sinukmani (sticky rice cake) is one of the Rosario’s bests.

June 9, 2011 – A year after, the team will go back to Rosario to take part in the celebration of their 324th Founding Anniversary. For the second time, we are about to witness the festival — and this year, we hope to grab a bite of sinukmani!

Last year, around 200+ participants from various sectors of the municipality joined in creating the 520 meter-long line of sinukmani. All About The Sinukmani Festival of Rosario, Batangas

The WOWBatangas team has only covered 3 of the 7 Sinukmani Festivals that are already conducted by the municipality of Rosario.

Rosarians have been celebrating the said festival since 2005 and the team has only managed to experience the 2009, 2010 and 2011 installments.

4 missed festivals.

And with a festival as grandiose as that of the Rosarians which is held every June 9, festival enthusiasts such as the WOWBatangas team may have all the regrets in the world.

Good thing though is that the good people behind rosariobatangas.gov.ph lent us a copy of all sorts of things about the Sinukmani (and its festival) which all Rosarians take pride of.

Though I, in behalf of the team could only wish to have experienced and have written what’s below. We have to give credit where credit’s due and we would like to thank, again, the people behind rosariobatangas.gov.ph for being kind in lending us these invaluable pieces of information and for being one in our goal to promote the colorful festivals of our province.

THE SINUKMANI FESTIVAL

The town of Rosario is one of the oldest towns established in the Province of Batangas. Established in 1687 with the help of by Augustinian friars, the town is strategically located and has access to and from other vital cities and municipalities – Lipa City on the North, Batangas City on the Southwestern and Quezon Province on the East-Southeast.

Blessed with rich soil and vast plains, it is no wonder that agriculture remains as one of the foremost sources of income among local residents. In fact, Rosario is known as the Rice Granary of Batangas, the major local source of rice in the province. It thus comes as no surprise that Rosario has also come to be known for its rice-based delicacies that have also come to be intertwined with local culture.

One such delicacy is the sinukmani – a concoction made of malagkit rice, coconut milk and sugar, much like the biko in appearance but with a variation. The sinukmani is topped with caramelized latik for added flavor.

The sinukmani is not everyday fare for local residents. It is a special delicacy prepared only when there are a number of men around because cooking it requires a lot of muscle – the more cooked the malagkit gets, the heavier it gets as well. It is best eaten as a meryenda, each slice on a piece of banana leaf, and served with a strong cup of kapeng barako. Or it can also be taken as a desert to top a rich meal during fiestas and other festivities.

It is a favorite particularly during weddings not only because of its taste but also because of what it signifies. It is sticky – for unity and a strong, binding relationship. It is sweet – for sweetness in a relationship. Cooking it requires muscle – just as a relationship requires much effort in order to make it work.

The Sinukmani is also a favorite fare during Undas or All Saints’ Day when families come together to pray for and reminisce on their loved ones who have passed away.

Such is the sinukmani. As rich and filling as the culture and history of the people of Rosario. As sweet and unique as the smiles that welcome friends and guests to this peaceful town.

HOW THE SINUKMANI FESTIVAL WAS DEVELOPED

The Sinukmani Festival was conceptualized by members of the Foundation Anniversary Celebration Committee headed by Mayor Felipe A. Marquez in 2005. While planning the activities for the 318th Foundation Anniversary of Rosario, the members of the committee deliberated on how to best promote the municipality which is known as the Rice Granary of Batangas. Different rice products were suggested and discussed lengthily until the committee decided on sinukmani as the best rice product for Rosario to feature in a festival.

During the First Sinukmani Festival, a long table of this sweet delicacy was laid out to be shared among local residents. Because of its success, for this, its second year, a bigger celebration was planned, with the very first Pinakamalikhaing Sinukmani Contest along with a Street & Plaza Dancing Competition participated in by local high school students. These activities were also carried over in the 2007 Sinukmani Festival, which has been exclusively given media coverage by GMA7’s early morning program, Unang Hirit.

Through this annual activity, the municipality hopes to etch a niche for itself among the many emerging festivals throughout the country today.

THE SINUKMANI

The basic ingredients of the sinukmani are products which Rosario is well known for: rice, coconut and sugarcane. The ingredients are: 1 salop of malagkit, 1 ½ kilos of sugar and 2 kilos of gata or coconut milk.
Cooking sinukmani involves the following procedure: First, cook the malagkit rice then set aside. Next, cook the sugar and coconut milk together, while constantly stirring until the mixture achieves a smooth, sticky consistency. Add the cooked malagkit and mix well. Transfer the mixture to a bilao lined with banana leaves and top with caramelized latik. Let cool and the sinukmani is ready to be served.

Twenty-four candidates are up to grab this year’s Mutya ng Rosario title. Who among these 23 candidates will bring home the crown and be Rosario’s fairest lady?

The pageant is part of the 324th Founding Anniversary of Rosario, Batangas. Activities for the celebration will happen from June 6 to 10, 2011. The pageant night for Mutya ng Rosario 2011 will be on June 10, 5:00pm at the Laurel Park.

Rosario is home to talented people just like Jovit Baldivino and Emelie Katigbak.

Jovit was hailed as the grand champion of ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent Season 1. The 17-year-old singer is from Brgy. Marilag, Rosario, Batangas.

Jovit captured the hearts of PGT viewers during his audition where he sang Journey band’s Faithfully. His performance became a trending topic worldwide and the very first uploaded video of his PGT audition reached 4 million views on YouTube.

From the streets of Rosario to the stage of Araneta Coliseum, Jovit’s life changed drastically. Read our interview with Jovit Baldivino and get to know the guy a little bit more.
