When creating to-go-to lists, Batangas should not be missed out.

Of course, we have world-class destinations here that local and foreign tourists are visiting every now and then.

Batangueño hospitality is another reason why non-natives are fond of staying in our province. Oh, don’t forget the food! Batangas cuisine is definitely one of the bests in the country.

And in Gia Recio’s blog yesterday for FemaleNetwork.com, she included the towns of Nasugbu and Anilao (barangay, actually) in the 30 Must-Visit Philippine Towns and Cities list.

Why visit Nasugbu?

Nasugbu is a 1st class municipality in the province and is popular among travelers who love going to the beach, camping, and trekking.

Mt. Batulao is Nasugbu’s pride. The dramatic slopes and land formations you would see when you reach any of the two peaks is, I bet, one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the natural beauty of Batangas.

Here’s a quick note from our resident mountaineer, Alva:

Dabest dun.”

This phenomenon which happens in December was where the name “Batulao” originated from. When the sun sets between the twin peaks, the surrounding rocks appeared to be illuminated hence the phrase “bato sa ilao” which they shortened and eventually became “batulao”.

Nasugbu also cradles the posh resort Terrazas de punta Fuego, the Chapel of Transformation in Caleruega which is a famous option for intimate weddings, Sandari Batulao which is the first residential resort situated on a mountainside, and another residential area which is the Kawayan Cove.

Beach bums and island hoppers should not miss Tali Beach, Twin Island and Fortune Island. Aren’t these enough reasons why you should head to Nasugbu anytime soon?

Photo insert shows the statues of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and two of his men located on this Nasugbu beach to commemorate the start of the liberation of Luzon from the Japanese invasion. The local government celebrates its foundation anniversary every 31st of January (and that’s today), the day of the Nasugbu landing.

Why visit Anilao?

Anilao is paradise for divers. It is such a lovely destination both over and under the sea.

Anilao’s marine sanctuary is one of the most precious gems of the province and we hope people would continue to preserve the magnificence under its waters.

Situated in the town of Mabini, Anilao is also a point to be at for mountain climbers. I love the way I say “Mt. Gulugod Baboy”, which you’d never hear here. Haha.

Here’s what Alva has to say about the “climber-friendly” Mt. Gulugod Baboy:

Did we give you good reasons to visit Nasugbu and Anilao? Don’t just count on the words that excite you here. Go and explore more of Batangas. We guarantee you the best summer adventure here. Winks.

Mabini is a paradise for those who enjoy marveling at the beauty of nature. This is a destination which will prove that Batangas is truly endowed with the magnificence of God’s creation.

Heading to Mabini? Dont’s forget to visit these spots:

Anilao

A natural wonder, Mabini offers first-rate diving sites and is considered one of the country’s best. Barely 2 hours drive from Manila, this town is more popularly associated with one of its Barangays, “Anilao”, comprised of crystal blue waters and rich marine biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy variety of activities ranging from swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, or island hopping with a wide selection of accommodation offering from native cottages to luxurious beach resorts. (mabinibatangas.gov.ph)

Mt. Gulugod-Baboy

Gulugod-Baboy is the general term that describes the hills that traverse Calumpang Peninsula. It has three peaks: Gulugod Baboy, Pinagbanderahan, Tore. It is reached through several passages: Anilao, Panay, Bagalangit, Ligaya, Laurel and Malimatoc I. It is 525 meters above sea level and at its peak, you can see, from east to west: Janao Bay, Maricaban Strait which bears Sombrero andMaricaban Islands, a distant, faint blue Mindoro, Verde Island (SW) and Batangas Bay. The city and port of Batangas is visible on the west, following a farther Mt. Daguldul. To the north is Mt. Maculot, and even Mt. Batulao and the Tagaytay highlands.

It is popular among hikers during the Holy Week. (Wikipedia.com)

HISTORY OF MABINI, BATANGAS

Legend states that the first Malay settlers to inhabit the vast fertile land bordering the two bodies of water now known as the Batangas Bay and the Balayan Bay, first found anchor along the shores of the land protruding down Southwest ward known geographically as the Calumpan Peninsula.

These Malay settlers found the land fertile and agriculturally appropriate and the sea rich in marine resources. They established their settlement in this once vast unknown land. As more Malay settlers arrived from distant lands, more settlements were founded until even the upland regions of the peninsula were settled.

The inhabitants had their own form of village government. They were ruled by a headman, a datu, or a sultan, in case of big encampments. Malay civilization began to take roots. Rapid increase of population brought about the settlements of all the neighboring regions, that it did not take long before eastward, northward, and southward of these known regions were inhabited to comprised later on the whole province of Kumintang, better known later as Batangas.

It was also mentioned among the folklore of this community that a Chinese explorer and geographer whose name could no longer be recalled, first landed on the shores of this peninsula in one of his trips to the island of Mai which is now known as Mindoro. Chinese, Indonesians and other races found haven for their trade along the shores of this peninsula during the pre-spanish era.

During the Spanish times, a certain galleon of the Spanish government, plying between this country and Mexico, was attacked, plundered and sunk by the Moro pirates riding in glittering vintas along the shores of this peninsula. It can also be said in passing that the Malay settlers were subjected to the uttermost cruelty and vandalism done by the Moro pirates who wantonly attacked the villagers along the coasts.

These Moro forages caused hardships and other difficulties to the inhabitants, resulting in their formation of stronger measures to counteract the Moro depredations. This menace to the lives and properties during the pre-spanish era continued during the Spanish times, and for purposes of administrative expediency, there were created political subdivisions-the insular territories to provinces, the provinces to municipalities or “pueblos”, the “pueblos” or municipalities to barrios and lastly to sitio.

It came to pass then that the Calumpan Peninsula was made a part and parcel of the pueblo or municipality of Bauan, in the province of Kumintang, now Batangas .The same peninsula territory of Bauan was subdivided into barrios, namely: Mainaga, Pulong-Niogan, Pulong-Balibaguhan, Anilao, Solo, Pulong-Anahao, Bagalangit, Nag-Iba, Malimatoc, Saguing and Talaga.

For more than three hundred years, while the Archipelago was under Spanish domination, this peninsula remained a part of the “pueblo” of Bauan and even in the early part of the American occupation. The people of this peninsula, like other people of other regions, suffered untold hardships under the Spanish rule. The yoke of the Spanish tyranny was thrown off after the gallant uprising of 1896. The revolution emancipated the people from the tyrants of Spain.

In that revolutions, the people of this peninsula were not found wanting in courage, as the cream of the youths of the community joined the revolutionary forces, and even during the fight against the American forces they did not withdraw their support of the insurgents’ cause. Foremost of the heroic young men was Don Francisco Castillo, known as Apian Kiko, who led the fight for freedom in this peninsula. In this glorious revolution, many valiant heroes, hailing from the different places of the peninsula, offered their lives to the altar of the motherland.

The present generation of this community failed not to reciprocate the great deeds of those who fell in the dark of the night, when under popular subscriptions, headed by no less than Dr. Laureano Castillo, son of the famed leader, Kapitan Kiko and the then Municipal President Julian Bautista, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, respectively, of the drive, they honor to the men who died for their country with a monument constructed in front of the old presidencia building.

Although it was built primarily to erect the image of the Great Sublime Paralytic, Apolinario Mabini, it now also serves as a repository for the bones of the thirteen martyrs of this place who died in the memorable battle of Mahabang-Dahilig, during the Philippine–American Warnamely: Tirso Sumadsad, Juan del Espiritu Santo, Ramon Ilagan, Julian Matulin, Bernardo de los Reyes, Enrique Castillo, Zacarias Castillo, Francisco de Claro, Moises Maramot, Nicolas Adalia, Pantaleon Panopio, Serapio Aspi and Gavino Garcia upon the advent of the American rule, the same peninsular territory of Bauan remained with the mother municipality, until, after great efforts had been exerted by the proponents of establishing a new municipality, independent of the town of Bauan, fortunately for this peninsula, such men as Don Regino Marasigan, then Municipal President of Bauan, and such illustrious sons of this community, namely: Don Francisco Castillo whose gallantry had been mentioned above; Ignacio Leynes, who later on became the father-in-law of the famed revolutionary leader, Tomas Castillo, Indalecio Calangi, Anselmo Sandoval, Marcelino Castillo, Epifanio Abrigonda, Andres Castillo, Nicomedes Guia, Venancio Castillo, Esteban Castillo, Juan Dolor, Pedro Manalo, Bartolome Jusi, Agaton Axalan and many many others that cannot be mentioned for lack of space, left no stones unturned, and in the end, found the good graces of the then Governor General Leonard Wood and the great leader of our country, then Senate President Manuel L. Quezon, resulting in the declaration of the new municipality, comprising the eleven (11) barrios of the Calumpan Peninsula and the whole of the Maricaban Island, as an independent municipality, with the name of MABINI, derived from the great name of that Sublime Paralytic, Brain of the Revolution and Premier Adviser to the president of the erstwhile Philippine Republic, Gat Apolinario Mabini.

The new-born municipality of Mabini province of Batangas, was inaugurated on January 1, 1918, with Captain Francisco Castillo, known as the founder of the town, as the first appointive Municipal President. With him to form the local officials of the newly inaugurated town were: Marcelino Castillo as Municipal Vice-President; Esteban de Joya as Municipal Secretary; Jose Generoso as Municipal Treasurer and Tomas Cuevas as Justice of the Peace. Appointed Municipal Councilors were Tomas Castillo, Pedro Manalo, Epifanio Abrigonda, Valeriano de Chavez, Tranquilino Buenviaje, Nicomedes Guia, Fermin Buenviaje and Juan Castillo. To form the local police force, Esteban Castillo was appointed Acting Chief of Police, and Messrs. Julian Bautista, Nicomedes Aguila, Policarpio Axalan, Marcos Panopio, Marcelo Reyes and Nazario Manalo, as policemen.

Here’s another contribution from Disayrey Sayat. I must agree that Brgy. Pinagkilatan (where the Monte Maria Shrine was supposed to rise) in Batangas City is an underrated paradise. I was also mesmerized with the view from the hilltop and immediately claimed that it was the most serene place I’d ever been to.

Check out Disay’s adventures around Batangas with her travel buddies.

Super Tour with Super People in Super Batangas

Batangas Province is truly a cradle of marvels that Batanguenos have to be thankful for. I was invited by the MassComm students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas to host their “telemag” which they described as really adventure-filled and exhilarating.

To feel the very essence of the trip we had to take jeepneys, tricycles or just walk. There were hurdles like the unpredictably unfriendly weather, unavailability of the destination and delays, but these challenges served as blessings for they made the journey realistic, fun and extraordinary.

I imagined our voyage as an enigmatic riddle that we had to unravel and while we were on our way to unfolding the answers we were much more surprised because with each answers being given, more adventures were revealed. The stories that completed our expedition are worth sharing.

On the first day we headed to Taal, Batangas. We felt like we infiltrated a portal and traveled back in time. St Martin de Tours church, the biggest in South East Asia, is truly magnificent. It has never lost its beauty after triumphing over numerous catastrophes in the past. The more it fights against natural destructions, the more it illustrates how strong we, Batanguenos, are.

The old houses were tremendously stunning after having survived the influential whip of modernization; it is admirable to see those standing until today and the same one which served as witnesses of our glorious past.

We also visited some of the shops that offer gowns and barong rentals. I fell in love with a blue, intricately designed gown that can be rented for surprisingly, only P2,500. I almost brought it home. Of course, we thought that going home wouldn’t be complete without bringing Tapa. The sumptuous viand made of pork that costs P240. Oh! I’ve been including tapa as the main dish on our dinner table since then.

On the second day we went to Recidencia Acosta Pastor in Batangas City. I laud how the Pastors preserved the ancient house. The atmosphere was oddly idyllic and as we stepped on the old ladder to get inside the house the whiff of yesterday’s air, enticed attentions and reminiscence of the distant past comprise our initial reaction.

The capiz window, floorings, furniture, and decorations sing different melodies that one would love to hear upon entering a house. It undoubtedly highlights cultural and historical tourism amidst the urbanization of the city where it rests.

The following day our feet wore the slippers of zeal and strolled to Mabini, Batangas. It was my first visit, the kind of visit that needs to be sufficed by another. Accessibility is always the first factor to consider when traveling, but whether getting there was smooth or not didn’t really matter because it was all worth it.

We walked on the stony shore of Solo, Mabini, met several sea creatures on the ebony sand and stepped on shells that collectors would love to keep. When we arrived at the spot where we executed the shoot, I was speechless and I had to ask much time to finalize my desired description of the destination. I chose not to write a script so I could naturally blurt out what my heart says during each moment when the emotion is still fresh and vibrant. It was indescribable or it just deserved to be described in the best way possible. The huge walls made of stones separate it from the rest of the world. In my vision, it was like they were protecting the natural marvels from any inconsiderate intrusion.

We dedicated the last day of the shoot to Pagkilatan, Batangas City. It is a potential tourist destination that needs more promotion. We landed in a chapel that replicates the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague in Czech Republic. We also said hello to the huge statue of Monte Maria where we were hospitably welcomed by the unsullied zephyr and pious setting that is ideal for meditation and relaxation.

The last spot where we tossed our last shoot was a challenge, we descended to a stone ladder with 180 steps to reach the Pagkilatan beach. We also vanquished some rough and elevated stones, passed a cave with a shallow door and subdued the heat of the fervid sun. When we found the most remarkable site, we almost shouted with delight. The billowing waves were sources of consolation and vitality after the tiresome quest.

As the sun bid goodbye we also swayed our sweet farewell to each other with smiles of beaming satisfaction and we made a pact that we’ll discover more of Batangas together again, soon.

It was a trip the whole WOWBatangas Team will never forget. The excitement and expectations were just prelude to the realization that Batangas is one blessed province with nature’s best abound. The vast sea, the curvaceous peninsula, the inviting sun – we had much of these wonders feeding our senses in this paradise called Dive Solana.

The team was fortunate to have the chance of experiencing Dive Solana, a resort situated in San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas. Dive Solana sits along the stretch of diving resorts in Anilao. Partly secluded, guests would be ensured with privacy and the kind of escape they want to have away from the hustles and bustles of the metro.

The Resort

Dive Solana is a family owned resort under the management of Solana-Kaigan Inc. Currently, the resort has eleven full time employees and three dive masters from a diving concessionaire. Guests will have a comfortable stay in any of the 16 rooms in the resort -Beachfront Cottages (1-4), Hillside Cottages (5-10), Bahura Suite (11), Twin Rocks Suite (12-14), and the Beatriz Suite (15) and the Solana Suite (16), the two largest rooms in the resort both located in the clubhouse.

The resort underwent a massive facelift in July-December of 2009 and re-opened in January of this year. The buffet dining is one of the resort favorites. Of course, Dive Solana won’t be named as such if not for its premiere resort activity – scuba diving. Not only that, you can swim, snorkel, go kayaking, boating or island hopping. Learn more of all these as you read on.

Loving Dive Solana

We were just so amazed with how beautiful Dive Solana is. As I write this one, I try to bring back the accounts of our stay and how I want to turn those mental representations into something that would make you, as a reader, feel what we have experienced from our stay.

Once you reach the entrance of Solana (parking area is right here), you have to go down to several stairs before you reach the resort proper. Yes, your feet would tire and you’d have to catch your breath as you go down but it would only last for a few minutes because the moment you land on the reception area, your exhaustion will fade away with the place’s exquisiteness and natural charm.

We could not help but marvel on what we saw. It was like viewing something that popped out of a travel magazine, a world-class destination right in front of our eyes. And as we settled our selves, the sun and the sea started to allure us. But we had to put off our fervour for a later time. So we diverted to other activities we could do in the area. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a good book. Kids can draw or have fun in the playground. Plus, the clubhouse is a Wi-Fi zone so you can stay connected with the online world. And for the shutterbugs, there are a lot of interesting subjects you might want to capture in Solana.

The team was welcomed by the very amicable resort director, who shared with us more interesting facts about Dive Solana. After the resort tour, the team had the first Solana buffet meal – and this is what you call real gastronomic adventure! If you’ll have an overnight stay, you will have four buffet meals and a light snack. You don’t have to worry if you have food allergies or if you’re vegetarian. Solana has flexible menu. While eating, an easygoing music will play on the background, making your dining a more delightful experience. How’s the food? Well, it’s one of the reasons why the team never wanted to leave Solana. (See the reviews below)

The beach, sparkling with the afternoon sun’s rays, looked enticing. We gave in eventually. The team spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach – trading hours on swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, and picture taking. Unfortunately, we were not licensed divers so scuba diving was out of the picture (at least for now). It was, for me, the team’s most enjoyable afternoon to date. And I was just so glad it was in Solana. There were no signs of tiredness, or maybe they were just disregarded at that time due to the amusement that overwhelmed us. Ang araw na mismo ang sumuko sa amin.

As the day wound down, the atmosphere suddenly turned intimate. It’s the kind of feeling anyone would fall in love with: so relaxing, very cozy, very much like having your own paradise. True to the resort’s endeavor, we were able to experience how it is like to have a beach house. Solana’s best deal, aside from the fabulous facilities and amenities, is the actual resort experience itself. The friendly and very accommodating resort staff would pamper you with their warm and genuine service.

Dive Solana could be your own paradise for a day or for a week, depending on how long you could get over with its unrelenting comfort. It may be one of the high-end resorts in Anilao but it’s surely worth your hard-earned money. You might want to check the room rates and other resort details here.

Endowed with nature’s grace, this is one great place to have total relaxation. And as for the WOWBatangas Team, Dive Solana is definitely the sweetest escape.

WOWBatangas Team’s Review

More than its beauty, I was stunned by its sublimity. I could not help but praise God for His wonderful creations and for bringing our team to Solana. I could not contain the joy I had after spending great time in the resort. The view was more than magnificent. I could not actually think of exact words to describe what my naked eyes have witnessed. (How much more if I were able to see the sanctuary and the diverse marine life under the sea.) As for the food, certainly fit for king. Kudos to Roman for being such a great cook! All in all, the experience was perfect. Dive Solana is definitely one of the bestest places under the sun! -GERLIE

Dive Solana…I can tell so many things about the place but it’s only 10% of making you feel what a happy experience we had in this trip. I love, love the beach. Solana will give you an extravagant treat for the senses… What’s the best thing about Solana is the privacy and peacefulness of the resort’s vicinity. It’s like you own the place and you’d never want to leave. I fell in love with the kayak and the snorkel, the view of Tingloy and Sombrero Island across, and the resort’s bangus ala pobre. – DYAN

When you are looking for a place to unwind even just for a day, Batangas will surely meet your expectations. Batangas is loaded with beach resorts, recreation spots, ecological farms, relaxing spas, and diving spots. I’ve read a blog written by Aileen Siroy about her trip to Villa Trono in Mabini, Batangas. Have you heard of this small hotel in the vicinity of Batangas’ reknowned diving spot? Click here to read her article.
