We often hear the term OTOP on trade fairs showcasing the products of a particular town or city in the Philippines.

The One Town One Product (OTOP) is a priority program of government to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. Through OTOP, local chief executives of each city and municipality take the lead in identifying, developing and promoting a specific product or service, which has a competitive advantage.

OTOP Philippines supports micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to manufacture, offer and market distinctive products or services through the use of indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents. (otopphilippines.org)

In the recent Provincial Trade Fair held in Calaca as part of the Ala Eh! Festival, we hopped from one LGU booth to another to see the products each town is known for.

Batangas, with its undaunted natural beauty, remains to be among the top favorite summer destinations in the country. Tourists flock to San Juan, Calatagan, or Nasugbu, for an extreme getaway.

Little did they know that Lemery also cradles a resort which will give them the kind of recreation and relaxation they want to have. La Sueña Brisa Beach Resort and Events Place is along the shoreline of Lemery beach. I remember during high school, after every school year has ended, we would head to Lemery beach where summer memories abound.

La Sueña Brisa boasts of resort features which you could find in other resorts around the province yet you would only know what’s special about this place once you’ve landed your feet on it.

Probably, La Sueña Brisa’s main attraction is their infinity pool with color logic lights. Can you imagine yourself swimming on the water which gradually changes its color? Well, not literally though.

La Suena Brisa has 18 rooms and 2 Grand Villas for those who would opt an overnight stay. For day tours, they have foreshore nipa huts which would allow their guests to feel and see the beach closer. And oh, they have Cabanas, too. For small gatherings like up to 50 persons, they have The Pavillion to accommodate the guests. Special occasions and corporate events with a maximum of 200 participants can be held at the La Sueña Brisa Function Room which is equipped with essential amenities.

Speaking of events, La Sueña Brisa has an in-house catering service provided by their Bien Cocido Restaurant. Why don’t you try celebrating an important occasion at La Sueña Brisa?

Plus, they have a beverage store called La Cerveceria and a convenient store dubbed as La Tienda. More attractions to add are the Pajarella (aviary) and the Jardin de Mariposa (butterfly garden).

Enjoy your stay with fun bonding activities like singing over the videoke, spending hours on volleyball, table tennis, and billiards match. Now are you still looking for more fun?

You can check the rates and other resort details through their website www.lasuenabrisaresort.com

Sadly, we’ll have a rainy summer. Oh why, oh why? Due to the untamed and quite confusing climate change on earth, summer here in the Philippines could be a wet one. Tsk.

But there is no reason for us not to enjoy this season especially the young ones who would take a rest from school. Check the best resorts in Batangas through this list:

Residencia de Riego Resort, Alitagtag

Although it would be a bit crowded on weekends, it’s still the best time of the week to visit this one-of-a-kind resort in Alitagtag. Residencia de Riego has great facilities and we’d have to give plus points on the cool vibe flourishing all over the resort. Get to enjoy the 12 color logic lights on the three swimming pools. Enjoy backstroke or freestyle as the water changes its reflection from red to violet to green and so on.

To learn more about what Residencia de Riego has to offer, click resort in Alitagtag, Batangas.

Galilee Place Resort and Spa, Balete

When the team visited Galilee Place in Balete a year ago, (the first Galilee Place is in Brgy. San Sebastian, Mataasnakahoy) it was still under construction and whatever will rise on the location, aside from the already existing huts and rooms, were all shared to us through our interview with the resort owners.

Galilee Place Resort and Spa is located along the shoreline of the vast Taal Lake. Do you want a serene summer destination along a majestic natural wonder? Galilee Resort and Spa in Balete will give you the serenity and recreation your overworked body needs to have.

For a complete feature on this Balete, Batangas resort, click Galilee Place Resort and Spa.

Villa Khristalene, Talisay

It’s the ‘poshness’ of luxury resorts squeezed in this property. By land area, it’s not as vast as other beach resorts you frequently visit. But Villa Khristalene has something really special.

One, it’s also sharing the lovely view of Taal Lake and the Mt. Binintian across. Two, guests must try the food in the restaurant, particularly the Pinoy dishes. Three, it’s a pool resort, you can enjoy a swim, or try their other activities – billiards, boating, fishing, or singing out loud in their videoke room. If you want a treat for your tiring muscles, their have massage chairs there.

Read our Villa Khristalene experience by clicking affordable resort in Talisay, Batangas.

La Virginia Resort and Hotel, Mataasnakahoy

When you get here, it’s like you’re setting foot to a couple of different resorts with the extensive land area that cradles many resort features to enjoy.

Take a refreshing dip in the infinity pool; take pictures on The Buddha View-Deck and feel like you’re in Thailand; have a massage in the spa village; ride on the La Virginia Zipline! Whatever you want to do – roam around and take pictures, eat at the restaurant, or take a snooze in their hotel rooms – a day wont be enough.

You can visit their site to check on the rates and other important details: www.lavirginiaresort.com

Club Balai Isabel, Talisay

When I did the “wedding venue of the stars” article, this resort sits perfectly on the earlier part of the post as it has only been a few days ago before that article was written, when celebrity couple Kristine Hermosa and Oyo Sotto got married in Balai Isabel.

This 10-hectare resort reflects Filipino hospitality matching the global standard in the industry. People might think that this is owned by a foreign business tycoon when in fact, this is owned by a family who hailed from this side of Batangas.

It’s among the numerous resorts in Batangas which shares the captivating view of Taal Lake and the ‘often mistaken to be the Taal Volcano’, Mt. Binintian. Club Balai Isabel’s infinity pool is one of the largest swimming pools I’ve seen so far. Just like any other resorts, Club Balai Isabel has a lot of fun activities available for every guest’s satisfaction. (Photo Credit: www.tripadvisor.com)

La Sueña Brisa Beach Resort & Events Place, Lemery

This one you should check out if you’re heading to Lemery. La Sueña Brisa is located along the shoreline of the Lemery beach. The resort boasts of its two main attractions – the infinity pool with color logic lights and the butterfly garden which adds the ‘close to nature’ experience.

La Sueña Brisa has an in-house catering service and the Bien Cocido Restaurant to satisfy your cravings for sumptuous dishes while on vacation.

A few more resorts coming up!

Have the best summer vacation! Either sunny or rainy, just enjoy the trip.

December 7, 2010, SM City Lipa – Ten mini-bands signed and showed up for the Drum and Lyre Competition, one of the main events of the celebration of the 429th Founding Anniversary of Batangas. For the first time, this competition is being held outside of the Batangas Capitol in Batangas City, and this year’s host is Lipa.

At exactly 1pm, the competing mini-bands paraded from the left side of SM Lipa going to the front parking where the actual performances took place. The participating schools drew lots for their respective numbers, and it seemed from the spectator’s point-of-view that no one wanted to go first. But once call time begins, the participants, aged 6 years old to 12 year old, showed their talents in music and dancing to the audience with enthusiasm no matter what order they performed, and whether the sun was shining directly on them or there was a drizzle.

Each band was identified through their colorful costumes and remarkable musical arrangement. Some opted for rock music, while some others went for classical and contemporary. One notable performance was from one of the trainers who headbanged with their band members. Another trainer, Buddy Arnigo of Maghinaw Elementary School, Bauan, Batangas said that the preparations were not that easy in terms of the musical instruments and costumes. He was a trainer since 1994 and he speaks from experience about how easily anything from costume, to wrong notes and choreography can go wrong.

The winners were chosen based on 1) the musicality and 2) overall performance. The judges were Mr. Ambrose Azucena, Mr. Bobit Macapagal, Mr. George Cabullo, Mr. Jun Mapa, and Mr. Floy Quintos, who is the chairman of the board of Judges.

Different emotions from the contestants and parents showed all throughout the announcement of winners. Kids were already crying even before the 2nd placer was announced, and some were even hugging their fellow bandmates. Suddenly, it dawned on them that the weeks of hard practice will either be compensated or disappear into nothing in the next few minutes while the judges read their verdict. With their outstanding performance and uniqueness, the mini band from Lemery, Batangas (total score : 93.5) declared as the first place and received 75,000 pesos and trophy. Second place was Maghinaw Elementary School Band from Bauan, Batangas (91.5) and thry received 50,000 pesos and trophy. The third place went to first-time joiners from Tuy, Batangas(91.25) and they received 25,000 pesos and trophy.

JR got to pose with arguably the best dancer/majorette of the competition from Grand Winner mini-band from Lemery. See most of the pictures that we took just hours ago.

Among the 12 towns and cities declared under the impending state of calamity are the municipalities of Talisay, San Nicolas, Laurel, Balete, Agoncillo, Cuenca, Lemery, Mataasnakahoy, Alitagtag, Sta. Teresita, and the cities of Lipa and Tanauan.

Vice Governor Mark Leviste stated that he local government units will be using their calamity funds. According to 2nd district Board Member Joel Atienza, the province has a calamity fund of P85 million for 2010 but will only utilize 30% of the budget while the declared status is impending.

Government officials already advised residents living near the vicinity of Taal Lake as preliminary caution to a possible eruption.

Whenever I attend out of the province gatherings, seminars, confabs, I am usually asked about balisong. (Of course this is after i have introduced my self and mentioned that i am a Batanguena.) If not all, most of them would ask, “So you have a balisong with you?” And then i would reply and say, ”oh yah, which one? i mean, what size?” (kidding)

Attached to the common notion that Batanguenos are brave, hero-types, ‘magigiting’, is the idea that most Batanguenos carry balisong with them wherever they go. Well, this isn’t true. I myself, a certified Batangueno do not have even one.

Butterfly knives, also known as Balisong is a another Batangas’ pride. In the wikipedia, it is described as: a Philippine folding pocket knife with two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought to bear quickly using one hand. Manipulations, called flipping, are performed for art or amusement.

One would usually find batangas butterfly knives stalls on the highways of Lemery and Taal where one could directly buy balisongs. These knives are of various sizes, from a key-chain to beinte nueve – (the standard size) up to a gaden-cutter size.

Here are the various balisong designs and sizes one can choose from:
