We often hear the term OTOP on trade fairs showcasing the products of a particular town or city in the Philippines.

The One Town One Product (OTOP) is a priority program of government to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. Through OTOP, local chief executives of each city and municipality take the lead in identifying, developing and promoting a specific product or service, which has a competitive advantage.

OTOP Philippines supports micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to manufacture, offer and market distinctive products or services through the use of indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents. (otopphilippines.org)

In the recent Provincial Trade Fair held in Calaca as part of the Ala Eh! Festival, we hopped from one LGU booth to another to see the products each town is known for.

Classes are suspended in various parts of Luzon due to massive flooding and unrelenting rainfall caused by Typhoon Falcon. But nothing can stop the people of Balayan in celebrating this day.

June 24, the feast day of St. John the Baptist and of course, the celebration of the King of Philippine Festivals — Parada ng Lechon!

Parada ng Lechon 2009

Storm signal no.1 was announced over Batangas but like what I’ve said in the intro, nothing can stop Balayeños, not even Typhoon Feria. Tuloy pa rin ang Parada ng Lechon kahit anong mangyari! It even made the celebration more enjoyable with the downpour since this is all about getting soaked with water all around town.

Parada ng Lechon 2010

It was one of the best and the most unforgettable events the team had experienced. And I mean it to the superlative degree!

We arrived in Balayan shortly after dawn and just in time to witness pig roasting on every street. I can still remember vividly the pigs being showered with Royal (tru-orange) and how we were so excited to peel off the roasted skin too early.

The Kings

Of course, the stars of the day were the roasted pigs dolled up by participants of the Parada ng Lechon. The participants are not only from Balayan. There are groups and businesses who join this festival every year, and I mean big companies and organizations ha.

May mga lechon na ginawang boksingero, superhero, driver ng motor, beauty queen, model ng alak, atbp. Pabonggahan ang labanan!

Wet and Wild

It’s a wet and wild party for General Patronage! Haha. Young and old, Batangueños and non-Batangueños, party animals and homebodies — everyone get to experience the thrill of being fired with water guns or being poured with a pail of water from a stranger’s window.

Syempre, ang mga boys abang na abang ang mga chicks na pumaparada. Maui Taylor’s a consistent guest in Parada ng Lechon. Isa pang syempre, wala s’yang kawala sa bulingan. Haha.

After the grand parade, everyone gathered at the Rotonda. A fire truck stays near and that’s what made the people all cheering and soaking wet, haha. Imagine a fire truck hitting you with water.

Street Party Here and There

Yes, in every corner of the streets (at least in this district where it’s all happening) parties are up until the evening. Beer? Free beer for everyone! Para kang nag-bar hopping ng libre.

You’ll see people dancing, singing, laughing, and still splashing water forever. What an event.

We’re wondering how they celebrated Parada ng Lechon 2011 with Typhoon Falcon?

We’d like to share our collection of Parada ng Lechon photos throughout the years. View the photos of Parada ng Lechon: Then and Now album in our Facebook page.

Oh, if you have photos of your Parada ng Lechon experience, you can share them to us through blogs@wowbatangas.com. We’ll have your photos included in our Parada ng Lechon: Then and Now album. Don’t forget to include important information and the year the photo was taken.

It was in the October 17 episode of Rated K that I got to learn about another brave soul fighting for her life. Her name’s Geraldine Oliva, a native of Balayan, Batangas.

Geraldine or Dane was blessed with good looks, admirable talents, and the charm any girl would wish to have. She was known by a lot of people in her town because of these attributes. She had a career in banking industry; married his man, Mario; had four loving sons. Dane had it all. And now, she endures all the pain just to hold on to what matters to her life.

In 2004, Dane was diagnosed with Glomerulonephritis, a chronic kidney disease. A metabolic complication strucked her in 2007 while undergoing dialysis treatment. This caused her major deformities on her bones. A once beautiful woman suddenly loses her attractive physical attributes.

This photo was taken from the “Save Geraldine J. Oliva” page on Facebook. This was how Dane looked like back in 2008 and how she looks like now.

Her appearance was altered by deformities that caused painful depression on her part. But her families and friends stood by her no matter what. She was required a thrice-a-week dialysis but due to financial constraints, Dane undergoes dialysis only once a week. And if she missed having even one, it might cause her her precious life.

Mario became her backbone when her own support became feeble. It was true love put to test. I admire how Mario never stopped fighting in this battle. It must be so hard for him, just as hard as it is for Dane. May God bless this couple.

I got this update below from savegeraldine.tumblr.com. This was posted two days ago (Oct. 24, 2010).

A few days ago, a few of Geraldine’s bones were dislocated as she tried to get up from a sitting position. She has suffered insurmountable pain with any sudden movement ever since. She was confined in UST Hospital only yesterday only to be told that she cannot be confined because there was nothing else they could do except give her pain killers. The only position that she is able to be in is a lying position. If she tries to move or if anyone tries to move her, she can’t handle the pain that it gives her. Surgery is not an option for there’s a 99% fatal risk because needs to gain a lot more weight before it’s even an option. Her speech pattern is becoming more and more difficult to comprehend with each passing day.

If there was ever a time we needed your prayers, it’s right now. The doctors can’t do anything because she can’t even be moved. To those who are kindhearted and generous enough to donate a well-needed gurney so that she could be transported a little easier to various locations for her dialysis treatments, the donation would be very much appreciated.

Things are looking bad but we’re not giving up hope. Hope is last thing to go. Prayers and donations are very much appreciated. Every little word, every prayer, every thought and every cent could be vital. Please do what you can to help.

We thank you for your continued support.

It was a sad story millions of Rated K viewers had seen. But it was a beautiful sad story. We hope for the best.

For kindhearted people who want to extend financial support, you may send your donations at:
Banco de Oro – Balayan, Batangas Branch
Account Name: Geraldine J. Oliva
Account Number: 5890-12991-1

Balayan is home to the famous Parada ng Lechon. This is a first class municipality in the 1st District of Batangas. Get to know the history and town profile of Balayan below.

The word “BALAYAN” came from the word BA-I or balai which means house in Sri-Visayan dialect. Later the Filipino suffix “an” was added, thus the word Balayan was coined. This can also mean a group of house or settlement.

During the early days, the natives used to construct their houses on stills above the waters of Balayan Bay. It is said that when the Spaniards arrived the shores of Balayan it was already populated by the descendants of the two Bornean datus who settled in this place. Historians believe that Balayan is the center of the ancient powerful kingdom of MA-I.

The historic beginnings of Balayan which date back to the early 11th to 13th century as chronicled by Chinese historic accounts was a trading port as what they termed the “South Seas” of the barbarians, where Malays, Mongolians and Australians transported their goods for barter with products of the natives, which is believed to be the adobe of the “Tayakads” and the “Sagubangs”, the early inhabitants of Balayan who fled to the mythical mountain called Batulao, the home of King Suay and Queen Dalisay, the parents of Princess Tagaytay when the Bornean Datus arrived.

The settlement lies on the shores of a vast body of water which was later on called “Kumintang” or “Bonbon”. The people lived along the lands of the sea as well as on the lands of a big river coming from the fabled mountain of “Batung Dilao”, where Datu Balensusa and Datung Dumangsil, two of the ten datus who purchased Panay, arrived and settled when they were blown by winds when they tried to return home. Later Datu Dumangsil sailed northward and Datu Balensusa was left behind in what was then called Bonvon. The last Malayan ruler, one of his descendants, Datu Kumingtang, stayed in what is now called Pook and died there.

On May 8, 1570, the Spaniards first set foot on the shores of Balayan, headed by Mashal Martin de Goiti and Captain Juan Salcedo, and found that this place was a thriving community. Later Balayan was rewarded to De Goiti as his encomienda while villa Fernandina in Vigan Ilocos Sur became Salcedo’s encomienda.

In 1572, the Augustinian Friars planted the first cross somewhere in Barangay Lanatan and put a chapel of weak materials. However, the church did not last long for it was destroyed by barbaric natives. In 1575, another church was constructed in Brgy. Ibabao, whose remnants are still visible like the stone altar, thus mission of the religious fathers started. Balayan became the center of Christianity and cradle of civilization in the whole Southern Luzon.

In 1578, Balayan was officially establish as a Municipality in the name of the king of Spain and was founded by two Franciscan friars, Fray Esteban Ortiz and Fray Juan de Porras. The area covered what is now called the town of Nasugbu, Lian, Tuy, Calaca and Calatagan. From 1581 until 1732 Balayan became a province for 151 years.

The province of Balayan extended up to province of what Batangas, Marinduque, Mindoro, southern parts of Laguna and Quezon up to Camarines. The people had their own civilization and culture much advanced than those from other places at that time. The institutional hub of the seat of the town proper was moved and fortified from the shorelines to its present site for security purpose and haven for refuge against natural calamities as the rampaging waters and manmade hostilities brought by the Muslim attackers at that time.

In 1591, the church was constructed and blessed by. Fr. Pedro Chirino, S.J. In 1749, the construction of the stone church started. Stone walls in front of the church patio were erected to hold waters and fortress were built to ward off attackers. Some remnants of the stone walls are still visible at present. Balayan used to be a part of the Archdiocese of manila until the time the bishopric of Lipa was established. In 1795, the stone church was blessed and dedicated in honor of the Immaculate Conception, the Patroness of Balayan.

In 1838, the Municipality of Calaca was established and separated from the town of Balayan, However, the same was returned to Balayan in 1903 and re-established in 1903. In 1939, the towns of Nasugbu and Lian were established and became independent towns. However, the town of Lian was annexed to Nasugbu in 1903 until 1915. In 1845, the town of Calatagan was established and separate from Balayan but was returned to Balayan in 1903 and re-established in 1912. In 1855, barrios were established and there at least nineteen original barrios in Balayan. In 1867, the town of Tuy was established and separate from Balayan. However, it was returned to Balayan in 1903 until 1911.

With the succeeding regimes of foreign dominations and aggression of the country, the municipality has been under military occupations: First under Gen. Bell of the American expeditionary Force and during the Japanese Military occupation in 1941. After the liberation in 1945, Balayan remained as the center of trade, industry as well as education in the first district.

In not-so-distant past, Batangas Sugar Central has been established, further enhancing the development of the municipality into an agricultural community. Obviously with recently LANDCO PACIFIC, a tourist-oriented resort and STEEL CORPORATION of the Philippines, a galvanized iron cold manufacturing company, probably the biggest in Asia were among that gave additional income to Balayan. Likewise, Balayan is a co-host of the National Power Corporation Coal Thermal Plant in Calaca, Batangas for there are at least thirty five hectares of land where the said company stands.

It is our vision to see Balayan in the near future as a modern Agro-industrial community, a self-sufficient socio-economic unit providing livelihood, education, health services, food production and other needed infrastructure based on indigenous culture, local customs and traditional values.

• The first municipality in Southern Tagalog and the first province on Southern Luzon.
• The cradle of Christianity and seat of civilization in this part of the country.
• The home of delicious Bagoong and sumptuous Lechon.
• The home of STEELCORP, Asian’s biggest cold rolling steel mill and co-host of the NATIONAL POWERCORPORATION, a Coal-Thermal plant.
• A Progressive Agri-Industrial Community, a conducive haven of high moral-centered people and highly competitive globally.

This is surely not a festival for the quick-tempered ones. This is a huge party for people who embrace Filipino culture – infused with both the celebration of Catholicism and the rich cultural heritage. This is Parada ng Lechon – the King of all Philippine Festivals!

We woke up earlier than the 24th of June sun, still drowned in our own sleepiness. But upon reaching the town proper of Balayan, home to Parada ng Lechon, something has gotten into our senses that prompted us to get all the party hormones alive.

The Festival’s Main Star

Hundreds of pigs succumbed to death for the sake of this world-class festival. Aw, pity those cholesterol-rich Pinoy favorite. Before the parade started, we strolled down the streets of the Kanluran district (where Parada ng Lechon is being celebrated) to pay tribute to those roasted pigs and to witness how they have sacrificed their lives to make us all happy. Kawawa naman.

Marilyn, our newest team member, and I spotted a dozen of pigs being roasted. Then I saw a man bathing another pig with Royal (yes, the tru-orange). According to Odes Engriso, a resident who entertained some of our queries, told us that Royal gives the pig’s skin a pinkish/orangey tint. The roasting process lasts for about four hours or so. She also shared the longevity of this festival, dating way back to her grandparents’ days. Apparently, no matter how old this festival becomes, the cordial Balayeños keep hold of the excitement to rejoice this special fiesta every year.

The Best Part

This is it! Too bad we don’t have water guns. The Parade started around 8:30am, and even before that, there are a lot of locals already splashing water on the by-passers. Including us. One thing’s for sure – hindi KJ ang mga Balayeños. They are such fun-loving people and this trait makes the festival one of the happiest events in the Philippines!

As I’ve mentioned, this is not a festival for quick-tempered people. Dito, bawal ang pikon. If you become a target of the water splash, you don’t have a choice but to just give them the pleasure of doing so. We say, get it on! After all, this is for the feast of St. John the Baptist.

Participating in the parade were various business establishments, social institutions, clubs, and organizations – a mix of locals and guests from outside the borders of Balayan. Multitude participants flocked the streets of the district as the parade roamed around specific areas in town. Balayeños, together with local and foreign tourists, partied all day.

The best thing about the Parada ng Lechon is that you would not feel left out. Everybody loves merry making. So we blended with the elated crowd and let loose of our inhibitions. This is the grandest street party ever! Have you ever tried being splashed with water from a fire truck? It’s the coolest thing! Haha. I can’t hide my excitement, exclamation points are attacking.

This is the only fiesta where I’ve seen a concert stage on every street! Bukod sa tubig, bumabaha din ng beer. Libreng beer! Just as festive as the Mardi Gras festival. As in. If you’re a party animal, your reputation might be questioned if you haven’t been to Parada ng Lechon even for once. This festival is a real wet and wild party which everybody gets to enjoy – no matter what age group you belong to, no matter who you are, no matter from where you are.

Sa Uulitin

Balayeños deserve our warm applause for their equally warm hospitality. It’s a nice experience that you get to celebrate a festival other than your own town fiesta and you wouldn’t actually feel alienated. Kasing init ng baga sa paglilitson ang pagtanggap ng mga tao dito.

And with that, the whole WOWBatangas Team would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Vice Mayor Meldos Castelo for welcoming us. To his neighbors – the family who allowed us to use their hose and water guns (especially the kids and the little one named Yuri) – thank you so much and sorry if we weren’t able to at least ask your names. And to the HADS Club for letting us enjoy their street party.

We all hope to come back next year. What the Balayeños have made us feel is the kind of enjoyment that branches out from the roots of our being Filipino. You made us all feel proud to be Pinoys, and more so to be Batangueños.

See for yourselves how we celebrated Parada ng Lechon 2010 in our image gallery. Also, watch out for our exclusive interview with Vice Mayor Meldos Castelo for more details about this year’s Parada ng Lechon.
