Miss Earth 2008, Karla Paula Henry was called up on stage for her advocacy speech. Being a former Showtime hurado, Karla was asked by the roaring crowd of a “sample”. She chose to do a catwalk and left the singing to Josh Santana.

Before the announcement of the Top 5 finalists for Mr. and Miss Lyceum 2010 candidates, the cultural ambassadors of LPU, Lahing Batangan Dance Troupe, provided another extravagant performance.

And then they were five (no, 10)…

Top 5 male candidates were: Jowell Christian de los Reyes (#6); Paul Edward Macomb (#4); Michael Gerard Castillo (#7); Michal Bagui (#3); Jonathan Aguado (#9).

Top 5 female candidates were: Mary Jewel Punzalan (#13); Ge Lopez (#5); Mary Ruth Reyes (#4); Mona Hammad (#9); Marinel Andal (#8).

The final question that rocked the nerves of the guys: What can you suggest to strengthen LPU’s goal for internationalization?

The final question for the girls which reminded us quite a bit of the infamous ‘major, major’ scenario: If you would sum up the core values of the LPU, what would that single core value be? Explain.

The pre-pageant show included the casual wear competion and casual interview. These according to the organizers will make up the 30% of the total scores of the candidates.

Sept 11 was also a CHARITY day and so before the show, contestants of Mr. and Ms. LPU 2010 spent bonding time with their adopted kids at STORYLAND at SM City Batangas. They also gave some gifts and presents to these kids.

The grand coronation and pageant night will be on Sept 28, 2010 at LPU Gymnasium. Don’t miss it.

LPU Batangas is ISO 9001:2008 certified by Det Norske Veritas and its Liberal Arts and Nursing programs now has the Level III status from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). Malampaya Foundation noted the importance of English proficiency of teachers as a vital factor in global competitiveness of our teachers. The method of teaching English is a combination of the traditional approach and the computer-assisted language learning (CALL) through the use of DynEd software which utilizes listening-based interactions and multi-modal learning activities for all age and levels. A total of 80 hours will be allotted for the said training.

The trainees will be chosen from barangay beneficiaries of TALIM – Tabangao, Ambulong, San Isidro, Libjo, Malitam, and Barangays Cuta, Calicanto, Wawa, Bolbok, and Sta. Rita Karsada.

In line with this, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Malampaya Foundation, Inc. (MFI), Lyceum of the Philippines University, and Department of Education Batangas City on October 9 as a sign of partnership in implementing the ACCENT.

DepEd will help choose the teachers who shall undergo the training and will take charge of the monitoring and assessment of the chosen trainees. According to Luke Esteban, this is the first time that MFI launched a project for education. MFI shall provide the fund and will be the one to monitor and evaluate the trainees of the ACCENT project.

Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas will provide the trainers to facilitate the hands-on activities, computers, classrooms, software to be used in the computer-assisted training, will give updates on the progress of the trainees, and will organize the graduation of the trainees after the ACCENT training. As of now, 30 teachers already started the training.

This move is to prepare colleges and universities to the possible harm of the aforesaid influenza virus. De la Salle Lipa, Lyceum of the Philippines Batangas University, University of Batangas and particularly Batangas State University (with foreign students) are among the colleges and universities with a large number of student population and being unprepared for the posible cases would certainly cause a fast and alarming spread of H1N1 not only in the province but in the country at large.

With this concern, it is advised that colleges here in the province must have their own thermo scanner located at the students and employees entrance. Assembly like Freshmen orientation must also be postponed and announcements regarding the prevention of the H1N1 virus must also be in posted on bulletins and offices.

For the students, teachers and school staff, always bring sanitizers and alcohol, observe proper hygiene, have a healthy diet always and take vitamins C, zinc and E.

HISTORY

Lyceum Batangas is a tertiary educational institution established in 1966, which envisions itself to be the center for academic excellence in the country and in the Asia Pacific Region. It was established by former Senator Sotero H. Laurel, along with three prominent women of Batangas namely, Belen Castillo, Criselda Castillo and Pascuala Tolentino as a realization of the dream of former President Dr. Jose P. Laurel to make quality education available to the provinces.

Through a linkage with the Lyceum of the Philippines in Intramuros, Manila, Lyceum Batangas was set to reality. In a 2.2 hectare of land beside the Provincial Capitol of Batangas, the first building of the Institution was started with the construction of the first building named the Mabini Hall (after Apolinario Mabini, one of the sons of Batangas). The second building was the Jose P. Laurel Memorial Building, which housed the college departments.

As a commitment to continuous improvement, Lyceum Batangas is also the first school in the region to receive a school-wide ISO 9001:2000 accreditation, signifying the school’s compliance to quality management standards.

The Lyceum of Batangas an institution of higher learning founded in 1966 envisions itself as the center of academic excellence in the Southern Luzon area. Imbued with the ideals of Jose P. Laurel on God-centeredness, love for truth, assertive nationalism, Filipinism, social justice, and economic productivity, the Lyceum of Batangas pursues the development of the integral Filipino who is committed to the service of God and country (Pro Deo et patria).
