Aiming to have a reliable collection service provider and to provide its customers convenient and accessible avenues for bills payment transactions at the start of the year, Batangas II Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Batelec II) sealed a partnership agreement with CIS Bayad Center, Inc. (CBCI) last December 15, 2011.

The partnership enables CBCI to accept individual, corporate and government electric bills payments from the municipalities of San Juan, Taysan, Lobo, Rosario, Mabini, Tingloy, Alitagtag, Cuenca,
San Jose, Lipa, Mataasnakahoy, Padre Garcia, Tanauan, Malvar, Talisay, Laurel and from the city of Batangas.

Sa libro ni Bob Ong na Bakit Baliktad Magbasa ng Libro ang mga Pilipino?, nabanggit niya na ang jeep nating mga Pilipino ang isa sa mga natitira nating tunay na simbolismo. Sabi pa niya, kapag sumakay ka daw ng jeep, hindi ka lang sumasakay sa isang sasakyang panlupa na naghahatid sa mga pasahero sa mga destinasyon nila, ngunit sumasakay din tayo sa isang kultura – ang kultura nating mga Pilipino.

Ngunit ang jeep ay hindi naman talaga nagmula sa Pilipinas. Ito ay unang ginawa noong World War II bilang military jeepneys ng mga Amerikano at dito nila iniwan ang mga ito sa Pilipinas. Simula noong 1945 hanggang ngayon, nakilala ang jeepney sa Pilipinas bilang isang pambansang simbolo – may makulay na palamuti at siksikang mga pasahero.

Ang salitang jeepney ay pinagsamang “jeep” at “Jitney” (isang uri ng taxi na pinagsasaluhandin ng maraming pasahero). Sa Pilipinas, Sarao ang pinakasumikat na jeep manufacturer hanggang sa nasundan na lamang ito ng ilan pang gumagawa sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas.

Kilalang-kilala ang jeep bilang isa sa mga pinakasikat na modes of transportation sa ating bansa. Kadalasan, dalawang tao ang nasa unahan ng jeep – ang driver at ang kundoktor. Ang kundoktor ang bahala sa pagkolekta ng bayad, ngunit kung wala ang kundoktor, ang mga pasahero mismo ang nagpapasa-pasahan ng mga bayad hanggang sa makarating ito ni Manong Driver. Sa tuwing hihinto naman ang isang jeep sa mga terminal, merong barker o dispatcher na tumutulong sa driver para mapuno ang kanyang sasakyan. Isisigaw ng barker ang destinasyon ng byahe, kung ilan na lang ang kulang at kung minsan, kahit siksikan na at wala nang magkakasya, sisigaw pa rin ang barker na pwede pa ang dalawa.

Para naman makababa, kailangang pumara ng mga pasahero. Yan ang kalimitang kultura. Sisigaw ka ng “Para!” para tumigil ang jeep at para makababa ka. Sabi nga ng mga barker, “Ang katok, sa pinto. Sa sutsot, sa aso. At ang para, sa tao.”

Tinatawag din ang jeep na fierra ngunit hindi ito masyadong ginagamit dito sa Pilipinas. Nakilala ang tawag ditong fierra sa isang lumang Pinoy na kantang Ang Fierra ni Juan ay may Butas sa Gulong. Ang jeep ay nakarating na rin sa ibang bahagi ng Africa bilang public mode of transportation.

Ilang linggo na ang nakakaraan, ang BBC TV show na Toughest Place to Be a Bus Driver ay nagpunta sa Pilipinas upang pasubukan sa isang London coach/bus driver ang pagmamaneho ng Pinoy jeep.

Ganyan ang Philippine jeepney, maraming naihahatid, malayo ang nararating, at tatak na sariling atin.

WOWBatangas Team’s Christmas Party in Cintai (Bali in Balete Again!)

It was the team’s second time in Cintai – Corito’s Garden. But this time, the visit was loaded with so much fun as we celebrate Christmas with our bunch of OJTs.

Let me share our stories through the photos below. Para kaming nag-party sa isang comedy bar. Suko kami sa pagtawa at pagpalakpak. We never thought the night to be that hilarious. Salamat sa pagka-bibo ng mga OJTs namin.

Selling WOWBatangas Tees (The 2011 Provincial Trade Fair Experience)

The Ala Eh! Festival 2011 which was held in Calaca had been very memorable for us. Aside from those events that our team had covered we also joined the Provincial Trade Fair.

We did not waste the chance given to us with that trade fair. Since we are selling shirts online, we used the booth allotted to WOWBatangas Team and we did sell shirts for our eight-days stay.

On the first day, I felt very nervous for I was not that familiar in selling shirts, you know -the marketing strategy. Haha.

I really don’t know how to convince people to buy our products. But since our shirts have that cool, funny designs and Batangas-inspired statement shirts, the customers were amazed and we sold hundred-plus shirts.

Eventually, I started to enjoy staying at the booth and sell our shirts after that first day.

Though the weather was not friends with the venue of the trade fair, still it did not stop us to sell our shirts – go na go parin ako. One of the best things that I have enjoyed with that experience was the chance to meet new people, new friends as well.

Going back to our store, of course there are this customer’s favorite items. For my eight days stay on the store, the shirt with the Ala Eh! logo for 2011 is one of the best selling designs, followed by the “Do not do” shirt (the one with the Batangueño translation “Kung ayaw mong magay-on ay wag kang gay-an!”), the Jeepney shirt, and the Guyam shirt. Some even opted to have customized or personalized designs

Although we have best-sellers, the other designs did make customers laugh and stay for a while at the store and stared on the other shirt designs.

Not only Batangueños were amazed with the designs, even the foreigners were attracted to buy some shirts, too.

That experience was indeed remarkable, not only for me but for the whole WOWBatangas Team.

WOWBatangas Joins Ala Eh! Festival 2011 Provincial Trade Fair

Since November 30, the whole team have been staying here in Calaca for the Ala Eh! Festival 2011 celebration. And part of the 430th Foundation Anniversary of the Province (from which the festival was anchored), is the Provincial Trade Fair.

Syempre hindi kami magpapahuli! Just like last year when we joined the Trade Fair for the Ala Eh! Festival 2010, we’re selling WOWBatangas Tees in this year’s exposition. Mas magaganda at mas nakakatuwang designs na exclusively sa amin n’yo lang mabibili.

Trip to San Juan, Batangas: The Home of Fine Beaches and the Lambayok Festival

I define San Juan, Batangas in three words: popular, luxurious and festive. Those we’re the words that people would be certain to say after they have toured this place. Not just a place but a paradise of
wondrous panoramas surrounded by this ironic term of Festive Barakos.

And if there is one thing that we Batangueños should be more proud of, that would be the beaches. The province of Batangas is known for long white-sand beaches engulfed with vast blue seas which are evidences of rich marine biodiversity. One of the most famous beaches here lies on the eastern part of the province, the municipality of San Juan. Which I assumed also to be one of the most recognized and competitive municipalities in the province for having magnificent beaches enough to provide the tourists the accommodation beyond their expectation.

For a Batangueño like me, the beaches here give more than enough experience. Usually, my family goes here during summer. That’s why summer days are one of my most awaited seasons every year. Vacation. Moments of fun. Indulgence. These are the things I found in San Juan beaches. That’s why whenever we have getaways, San Juan is our first choice. A 2 ½ hour travel would be not that time consuming for after you have arrived and witnessed the beauty of the beach, it will all be worth it.

There’s always a smile in my face whenever I see the sea waves and hear the sound it makes. It’s relaxing. I could walk forever with my barefoot for as if I am walking on a foamy surface. I see the sunrise and the sunset with a perfect picturesque that everyone can have a perfect shot in every angles. What makes the trip even happier is the company you have. Sharing blissful moments with your family in harmony with nature is an experience that’s truly rewarding.

A luxurious haven. Beach resorts in San Juan gives satisfactory accommodation and recreation to every tourist. There are resorts and hotels in San Juan which provides world-class services such as Acuatico Beach Resort, Estrellas de Mendoza Aplaya Resort, La Luz Beach Resort. Yes, please do take note of that. But still, there are accommodations which are affordable for budget-conscious beach bums.

But there’s more to San Juan other than its white sand beach. San Juan, Batangas is also known for being festive when it comes to presenting the town’s culture, creativity, and hard work. The Lambayok Festival is the reflection of the rich cultural and economic background of San Juan, Batangas.

This is just one of the many Batangueño festivals that everyone should be proud of. The term Lambayok is a contraction of the word lambanog (coconut wine), palayok (clay pot), and karagatan (Filipino term for beach) being its prime sources of livelihood and income. This festival happens on the second week of the month of December.

Different events like street dance parade, court dancing competition, agricultural tourism fair, and the search for Mutya ng San Juan are the highlights of this festival.

I had been reading some facts about Lambayok Festival but it is far better if we could witness this festival personally. The events will surely entice people even from far places to come and visit San Juan
and see for themselves the wonders found in this town. Having this festival serves as a break-through for many opportunities for the promotion of the tourism of this town.

Along with other popular municipalities and cities in the province, or even in the entire country, I know that San Juan, Batangas has a lot of potentials that can be shown and shared to the world. And the world awaits the growth of this municipality.

Beaches and the Lambayok festival are more than true representations of how beautiful San Juan, Batangas is. These are manifestations of hard work and inventiveness which makes me more proud of who and where I do belong – the province of Batangas.

The Stories Behind ‘Cosplay United: The Beginning’

After a couple of cosplay events we’ve covered and partly managed in the past, we had that will to finally put up our own.

October 23 at Robinsons Place Lipa, cosplayers from different parts of Batangas and beyond gathered for Cosplay United: The Beginning. With the huge tarpaulin backdrop on the stage of the Activity Area, the event title and the corresponding images posed something to look forward to.

And in three, two, one…

The event started a bit late and the first few hours of the day were spent on registration of the participants. Good thing Jackie knows the word calm. Keep calm, keep your cool. I personally have lost a few strings that day, haha.

In case you never heard about the event, there were three competitions incorporated in this Grand EB for the members of Cosplay United, the group that we formed to unite the different groups of cosplayers here in Batangas.

The first competition which was the Chibi, intended for kiddie cosplayers, turned into a simple presentation as there were only three Chibi cosplayers who came. They were so cuuuute. And they’ve got very supportive parents. Kudos to them.

Our cosplay event would not have been possible without, of course, the support of the CU members who were there to participate — the cosplayers of Batangas City Cosplayers (BCC), ARIDFAS Visual Arts (AVA) from BSU, and BRIJE (DLSL cosplayers). We were glad that there were contest participants who signed in to become a CU member. Can’t wait for the community to grow.

BCC performed two skits which were both appreciated by the crowd. Then, also part of the CU members grand EB were some activities which were intended to make them socialize among themselves.

You know what’s interesting about these cosplayers? They hold on to something that they are very passionate about. With that, they are able to work on their creativity. And hey, it’s another form of self-expression!

It may have started later than the targeted time but when the competition proper began, eyes were glued on the stage. Fifty-three cosplayers competed for the Regular category (characters portrayed were with not-so complicated costumes) and five contend for the Mecharmor category (robots, characters with intricate armored costumes).

There were a few crowd favorites. I can remember how the audience laughed (yes, laugh talaga) and cheered for Angry Bird. Haha. We had a hard time getting over that guy. S’ya kasi yung makulit na ilang beses kaming pinuntahan sa registration. I thought nang-aasar lang, haha. Winner ka boy!

Yes, Alfie Medina as Angry Bird won 1st Place in the Regular category. Winning at 2nd Place was Leah Teresa Mayor (who portrayed a character from Blood Rites MMORPG) and at 3rd Place was Mavick Yaco as Lunatic Charm.

When we gathered the Mecharmor contestants on stage, whoa! I can imagine Megan Fox and my guy Shia Labeouf. Huge, detailed costumes made of rubber sheets and paper maché. Bagging the 1st Place is Heron Bayanin as Jinouga of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Tied at 2nd Place were Red Daylusan as War Machine and Noel Lapdasan as Optimus Prime.

Kudos to all the cosplayers for putting up a good fight. It was worth the wait, we do hope all of you had fun yesterday. Oh, by the way, for cosplayers out there who want to be a member of Cosplay United, log on to www.cosplayunited.com!
