Here in Batangas, SM City Lipa and SM City Batangas prepared another one-of-a-kind launching. Great performances from local artists and musicians and intricately designed Christmas decors awed Batangueno shoppers.

The event was also accomplished to pay tribute to the youngest customers of SM Supermalls which for them serve as their inspiration.

Well, admit it, you’ll love to shop more when items are on sale, right?

Yesterday, Communications Head, Miss D and I went to SM City Batangas to cover its 3-Day Sale. She also had a hosting gig for the Global Handwashing Day event. Yes, people might not know that part of our work was to enjoy roaming around the mall. Sad to say, we’re not able to shop as we expected (GCs were not accepted when there’s mallwide sale).

Oh well, as expected, there are many people craving for lots of stuffs as they are up for grab on discounted prices.

Up to 70% discount on selected items, everyone’s grabbing their own items.

Until we left the mall and I saw that people really took advantage of SM City Batangas’ 3-Day Sale.

Global Hand Washing Day

Before we enter the mall to check on the mallwide sale, a short program was held at the mall’s entrance.

Dubbed as Global Hand Washing, it was all about the proper way of washing our hands.

Respected guests, together with the selected boy scouts and girl scouts, demonstrated the ways on how to wash our hands properly.

Good thing that SM conducted a program like this, for it is important for us to learn simple things that can keep us away from sickness.

This, by the way, is in partnership of SM Cares, DOH, DepEd, and Uniliver.

The Coffee Convention highlighted the artwork exhibit of coffee painter, Sunshine Plata. Sunshine is half-Batanguena, her mom is from Bauan. Get to know more about Sunshine in our separate feature on her.

It was an afternoon of pure delight as the atrium was transformed into a garden with wooden furniture courtesy of Mahmood Khorrami Pour Exotic Furniture Collection.

The event started with a coffee tasting activity facilitated by Jaysac Arellano and Carla Ocfemia or Starbucks Coffee SM City Batangas. The two baristas shared the beginnings of Starbucks and demonstrated the step-by-step procedure on how to savor the goodness of their house blend coffee.

The ribbon-cutting for Sunshine’s coffee painting exhibit followed. See the pictures in our image gallery below to see some of Sunshine’s works.

After the awarding program of our photo contest cosplayers started rushing into the Event Center where the event was held. The registration was a bit crucial but after the contestants were given their official contest number, the cosplayers paraded around the mall area and then went back to the Event Center.

It was a good opportunity for the photographers present, particularly the Batangas Province Camera Club and the MHFPC finalists, as the cosplayers gamely posed in the photo shoot.

The board of judges for the Cosplay Extreme competition were Miss Lipa Tourism 2010 and Mutya ng Batangan 2011 2nd Runner-Up Czshevinah Alejandro, Barik Mobile Bar owner Dante Inciong, Jr. and De La Salle Lipa associate professor and certified cosplayer Michelle Malvar, who served as chairman of the board of judges.

A total of 54 cosplayers joined the competition. The cosplayers dressed up themselves as the characters of popular animes, online games, mangas, and even from the movies.

There were cosplayers inspired by Cabal, Final Fantasy, Card Captor Sakura, Naruto, Iron Man, Transformers, among many others. Most of the cosplayers exerted effort, time, and money. They come well prepared for the competition.

I asked some of the competitors about their costumes. “Okay naman, medyo mahirap lang umakyat sa stage,” said Marvin who competed as Transformers’ Bumblebee. Well if I’m about to wear his very elaborated costume, I might have fallen more than ten times.

Even kids in robot costumes showed enthusiasm and the willingness to compete. “Hindi naman po mahirap, kayang kaya oh,” said Cedric in his “Silver Knight” costume.

On the other hand, some of them are members of a cosplaying groups. I have asked some, they were really joining cosplay competitions together with their group and some of them were already featured on TV shows here and abroad. Although there are some first time cosplayers, particularly the kids, they still managed to show off and participate.

The Event Center was filled with creatively done costumes and it was apparent that the Cosplay Extreme contestants all enjoyed the contest.

Moreover, everyone should have seen those participants on stage. They entertained the crowd with their presentation on stage as they act like the characters they were portraying.

We were impressed not only on the cosplayers but on the parents, relatives, and friends proudly supporting the cosplayers. A father who accompanied his two children who joined the contest said it was a fun way of family bonding. Another thing, by joining such competition, a contestant could truly boost his self-confidence.

Who would know that watching anime and playing online games also have benefits, just like this.

In celebrating the 113th year of Philippine Independence, SM City Batangas held a flag raising ceremony at the mall front covered walk, June 12.

The event started with a parade led by Mataas na Lupa Elementary School Marching Band. Together with them are the Boys Scout of the Philippines (BSP), Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), SM Security Personnel, Danztek Dance Studio Dancers, Affiliates, Mall Tenants, and SCMC Employees.

This was followed by the flag raising ceremony done by the BSP. As the flag was being raised, everyone could feel the meaning of the Independence Day as Mr. Reymond Sajor sings the National Anthem. Mr. Sajor is a recording artist and the grand champion in the Vocalist of the World 2007. A video presentation was also being played. “Salutations to the Philippine Flag” was conducted by the Philippine Maritime Academy students.

Commemorating our independence from the bandage of tyranny, Mrs. Gemina F. Buenaflor, Asst. Mall Manager of SM City Batangas, delivered her opening remarks. Her message was to honor our national heroes who gave their lives to fight for our freedom from oppressors. SM City Batangas encouraged every individual to continue what our heroes started. That is by being an instrument of development of our country.

The same message came from Vice Mayor Joe Tolentino as he asks questions in his speech. “Is it true that all of us have freedom? That we are independent?” That question made the people silent for a while. He encouraged the youth to take away their thoughts that we are inferior to other races. He stressed three things: love our country, sacrifice for our country, and serve our country.

Then, a video presentation about our National Heroes and a dance number from Danztek Dance Studio dancers followed. You’ll see the colors of our Philippine Flag on their shirts. Many were amazed not just on how they performed but on how they showed their patriotism.

To end the event, SCMC Employees and Mall Tenants waved their flags as Mr. Reymond Sajor sings “Ang Bayan kong Pilipinas”. Confetti fell from above as everyone commemorates what our heroes made for our motherland.

In was indeed a very successful Independence Day celebration. We are looking forward to another year that we will celebrate our freedom and honor those who fought for it.

A total of twelve contestants participated on the “Pets In Flower Costume Contest” by SM City- Batangas last May 30, 2011.

Eleven cuddly dogs and a charming rabbit were definitely the stars of the event as they ramped with colorful flowers adorning their bodies and stood tall above a pedestal which highlighted all of it . The cute pets’ names are: Shyder, Jaja, Cola, Ginger, Noah, Akiro, Prixie, Bugs (rabbit), Gucci, PomPom, Shifty and Quickie.

With their names alone, one could definitely say that they have proud and loving owners.

Ginger, A Sharpei, Copped Second Honors

Darlene Tolentino, owner of Cola, a six month old shih tzu, bagged the top prize. The 25 year old Darlene, who is also a native of Sta. Rita, Batangas, is very much excited and told me that a good fraction of the winnings will be spent in treating her friends and of course, her most precious dog, for a good time.

Cola was like a cute little sunflower atop a mobile cart ala carosa which is also in congruence with the floral theme. She also stood tall and wore the floral costume with all the comfort in the world. Also, the fact that Darlene brought the whole family with her didn’t hurt as 20% of the criteria for judging belong to the audience impact.

The rest of the criteria are as follow:  Adherence to the theme: 30%; Creativity: 30%; Projection and Style: 20%.

The judges were yours truly, Ms. Zenny del Carmen of Flare Infinity Productions, and Mr. Eric Orolfo.

A shihtzu named Prixie is the event's third placer.

Prizes given were 5,000; 3,000 and 2,000 pesos worth of SM Gift Certificates to the First, Second and Third placers respectively. A special award—the Most FB likes picture award is still in the process.  The most number of Facebook likes shall be the winner in this category. Thousands of applicants, with hands holding their resumes and hearts filled with hope, participated in the “JOB FAIR 2011” at SM City Batangas. Around 57 companies offering local and overseas jobs were waiting for qualified applicants to go to their booths, pass their resumes, and get hired.

This year’s Labor Day Job Fair was organized by SM City Batangas in partnership with ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog and in cooperation with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), and WOWBatangas.com.

My feet kept on walking, my hands were busy typing, and my mouth was nicely explaining. Wow. I had a very tiring but a nice and fruitful day at the job fair.

After setting up our booth and a couple of minutes of waiting, the job fair finally began and participants quickly rushed to their target companies.

It was indeed a busy day for me. Being a website leader, I explained to my teammates how the website runs. I also have to take pictures of the job fair — the program proper, the employer and participants — which will be used in posting the details of the said event on our website.

I enjoyed seeing participants busy filling up their application forms, lined up to their perspective employers, and being interviewed. Moreover, I also enjoyed watching the PGT qualifiers perform on stage to entertain the job seekers while they are busy getting the job they want. They were Joy’s Diva and Marcelito Po Moy, the latter amazed the crowd with his dual voice.

Meanwhile, I also encouraged participants especially the employers to sign up on our sub website, jobs.wowbatangas.com. I didn’t imagine that I will have to talk with important people from different companies and also with the applicants.

Leaving the place with a positive curve on my face, I find the day very optimistic. Tiring yet very fruitful.
