October 23 at Robinsons Place Lipa, cosplayers from different parts of Batangas and beyond gathered for Cosplay United: The Beginning. With the huge tarpaulin backdrop on the stage of the Activity Area, the event title and the corresponding images posed something to look forward to.

And in three, two, one…

The event started a bit late and the first few hours of the day were spent on registration of the participants. Good thing Jackie knows the word calm. Keep calm, keep your cool. I personally have lost a few strings that day, haha.

In case you never heard about the event, there were three competitions incorporated in this Grand EB for the members of Cosplay United, the group that we formed to unite the different groups of cosplayers here in Batangas.

The first competition which was the Chibi, intended for kiddie cosplayers, turned into a simple presentation as there were only three Chibi cosplayers who came. They were so cuuuute. And they’ve got very supportive parents. Kudos to them.

Our cosplay event would not have been possible without, of course, the support of the CU members who were there to participate — the cosplayers of Batangas City Cosplayers (BCC), ARIDFAS Visual Arts (AVA) from BSU, and BRIJE (DLSL cosplayers). We were glad that there were contest participants who signed in to become a CU member. Can’t wait for the community to grow.

BCC performed two skits which were both appreciated by the crowd. Then, also part of the CU members grand EB were some activities which were intended to make them socialize among themselves.

You know what’s interesting about these cosplayers? They hold on to something that they are very passionate about. With that, they are able to work on their creativity. And hey, it’s another form of self-expression!

It may have started later than the targeted time but when the competition proper began, eyes were glued on the stage. Fifty-three cosplayers competed for the Regular category (characters portrayed were with not-so complicated costumes) and five contend for the Mecharmor category (robots, characters with intricate armored costumes).

There were a few crowd favorites. I can remember how the audience laughed (yes, laugh talaga) and cheered for Angry Bird. Haha. We had a hard time getting over that guy. S’ya kasi yung makulit na ilang beses kaming pinuntahan sa registration. I thought nang-aasar lang, haha. Winner ka boy!

Yes, Alfie Medina as Angry Bird won 1st Place in the Regular category. Winning at 2nd Place was Leah Teresa Mayor (who portrayed a character from Blood Rites MMORPG) and at 3rd Place was Mavick Yaco as Lunatic Charm.

When we gathered the Mecharmor contestants on stage, whoa! I can imagine Megan Fox and my guy Shia Labeouf. Huge, detailed costumes made of rubber sheets and paper maché. Bagging the 1st Place is Heron Bayanin as Jinouga of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Tied at 2nd Place were Red Daylusan as War Machine and Noel Lapdasan as Optimus Prime.

Kudos to all the cosplayers for putting up a good fight. It was worth the wait, we do hope all of you had fun yesterday. Oh, by the way, for cosplayers out there who want to be a member of Cosplay United, log on to www.cosplayunited.com!

Apparently, people nowadays are really looking for a job which is easier to apply for and at the same time a job which will give them a higher income. Most of us call this job as the “Last Resort.” Why? Because if you are old enough to be hired by business establishments or too young to fit a position due to lack of experience, call center is the only place that will accept you and pay for you!

Here in Lipa City, there’s two (2) big call centers which is battling great in terms of competence, service, quality of work and of course, salary. We got one in Robinson’s Place which is TELETECH which is almost known by everybody due to various advertisements and amrketing strategies. While the other one is Advanced Contact Solutions Inc. which is popularly knows as ACS located in SM.

For those who do not know much about call centers, it is not actually a NIGHT job. There are “accounts” who operates during day time depending on the time of operation in the countries they are provideing services for. Like in ACS, one insurance company account there really does not have any day shift because they render services to the people who are under the Eastern Standard Time. When we say Eastern Standard Time or EST as what we call center people call it, it means that it is an exact time opposite- 8 AM EST is 8 PM Philippine time, that’s our time. So, if you are planning to enter the call center world, your body clock must really be prepared. Not only because of the time differences but also due to unfixed schedules. There will come a time that you need to go to work even during dawn which will give you a headache of how can you come and report to work especially if you don’t have your own car!

When I started as a call center agent, I was really so afraid of everything. I know nothing about it! All I know about it is that I will call or answer phone calls, easy as that! That’s why it greatly surprised me to know that the life in the call center is a though one. Levels of interviews, different kind of trainings; puzzling exams; daily, weekly, monthly, annually and yearly monitoring of performance; attendance; quality performance.. You have to pass all of these for you to stay in it. Not only that, you have to prove your worth because if you fail, the account you are in will still somehow, give you consideration- you have to pass another batch of trainings and if you fail- it only means one thing- YOU’RE OUT!

But life there will still be fine depending on how you took things out and handle them. Also, the way you see things in perspective will surely help you a lot! You just have to enjoy the stay, bear with it and live it, as if you have no choice. That is if you are really looking for a good paying job,of course!

Night life! What we have there is extremely a different kind of night5 life. Because the real night life, that’s what we lost evidently. We don’t have time to go out with our friends- dance in the DISCO, drink and enjoy the night as if there’s no tomorrow. Heheh! Well, there’s a saying that if you can’t beat ‘em, join them! And that’s what most of the call center agents were doing. They can’t beat stress, so what they are doing is to live with the stress and get used to it. And it works! Every time we do have our breaks, most of the people there will go to the smoking area and release some grudge to those irritating callers and head-turning questions though a stick of cigarette. And also talk to their friends and plan when to gather to haver that DAYTIME drinking session.

So, for those youngsters out there who want to experience a different kind of real world, you can take your chances!
