“Ecotourism, Climate Change & Economic Development – Local Community Perspectives” this was the theme of the recently concluded 6th North Batangas Summit organized by First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) School of Management and Bato Balani Foundation. The confab was held last January 27, 2012 at Lima Park Hotel, Malvar, Batangas.

Empower the different communities to help in and mutually benefit from promoting tourism.

Improve Tourism appreciation and values among grassroots.

Edwin V. Zabarte-PIO Batangas.

We received a letter from Ms. Wendy Cueto just today. We hope that by posting this letter, we could help other OFW families who might be, in a way, sharing the same story. Also, with this post, we hope that government’s help be extended to those who truly deserve it.

“I have a very good story to share. Yesterday (January 3), I went to the office of the vice-president to ask for assistance on the swift repatriation of the remains of my brother Rey Christian Cueto, who died of sickness at Saudi Arabia. Although the Vice President was there, we were accommodated by Ambassador Jun Lozada who showed to us concern for the case. He made a call to the Administrator of OWWA (Ms. Carmelita Dimzon). He also made a letter for Ms. Dimzon requesting for the same. I also opened to Mr. Lozada my sentiments to the DFA.

This is my sentiment: When my brother was still alive and confined in the hospital at Saudi, I made a request to DFA through the person of Mr. Allan Manggis (DFA, OUMWA Case Officer, Riyadh Desk). The request (which is made through a phone conversation) states that I’m requesting our diplomats from the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh to ask/request/maki-usap to the Saudi Ministry to expedite the visit visa of my uncle who will take care of my sick brother. Mr. Manggis told me that the approval of the visit visa is already beyond their control and is in the hands of the Saudi Ministry. I myself, know that as a fact, that’s why I’m asking them (as diplomats) to talk to the Saudi Ministry, unfortunately they didn’t do anything, and didn’t even dared try.

Up to now, it is still a big question why they reject my request because I still remember the first time we went to DFA, it was the day before Araw ng Pasay (December 02, 2011). It was the time when my brother was taken to the hospital and we are asking if DFA OUMWA can give reports on what happened to my brother. We filled a form stating the request that we need. Unfortunately, the DFA, during that time was busy. Some of the office staff told us that the families of those who were sentenced to die in China were there and that they are processing their flight to China. I said to myself , “DFA OUMWA was kind enough to show concern to these people. They let their families see their loved ones on the last days of their lives.” During that time, I didn’t know the whole story of these Filipinos being sentenced to death.

I know how hard it is to be sick in a foreign land, without a family member taking care of you. So I requested my brother’s local agency (ISD Phils.)to facilitate my uncle’s visit to my brother in Saudi, and they give me a swift action. My brother’s insurance will cover the plane ticket and accommodation of my uncle while he is at Saudi. His Saudi employer (Globetech) sponsored and filed a visit visa. However, days passed and the visit visa was not yet approved by the Saudi Ministry. This is the reason why I asked DFA to ask/request/maki-usap to the Saudi Ministry to expedite the visit visa of my uncle, because I know, they were able to send the families of those convicted to death at China, and my request is not as hard to do as the ones that they did for the convicts.
Only now that I learned that these Filipinos that they are so concerned of were not OFWs, but merely drug traffickers posing as tourists- yet the government showed concern for these people. The government even asked for forgiveness from China for these people. It makes me wonder why. I can only make guesses. Maybe you can help me find out why.

My brother, on the other hand is a legitimate OFW. He is an Electrical Engineer who got a fatal disease that only a miracle can heal. We asked for assistance, that maybe our Philippine Embassy to Riyadh can talk to the Ministry to expedite the visit visa of my uncle. So that if God will make a miracle, my brother will recover with a family member taking care of him or if he will die, he will not die in vain. But DFA didn’t do anything. They didn’t even tried.

ISD Phils (Local placement agency) c/o Mr. Danilo Manlapig, Tel. Nos. 551 7852 at 551 1910

Salamat po,
Wendy Cueto Bautista

Our sincerest condolences to Cueto family. May Christian Rey rest in peace. Let’s storm heavens with our prayers para maging maayos na ang lahat.

Religion is undeniably a big part of the Batangueno Culture.

Hence the grandiose celebrations of feast days, the throngs of people that crowd parishes and the altars found inside each and every house.

Another proof is the sea of people who attend the Novena at the Redemptorist (where I frequent) every Wednesday.

The novena, according to Wikipedia.org, is a devotion consisting of a prayer repeated on nine successive days, asking to obtain special graces. The prayers may come from prayer books, or consist of the recitation of the Rosary (a ‘Rosary novena’), or of short prayers through the day. There are four recognized categories of novenae: those of mourning, preparation (for a Church feast, ending on the eve of the feast), petition, and indulgenced. A given novena can belong to more than one of these categories.

They may be performed in church, at home, or anywhere where prayer is appropriate, though some indulgenced novenas do require church attendance. Sometimes, a special candle is lit at the beginning of the novena which burns during the nine days of prayer.

True enough, most of the people I know that attend novenas are people who want to obtain special graces.

Passing the board exam, an offspring, wellness, and jobs are the panatas I would usually hear when the priest opens the proverbial liham.

See, in a novena, the devotees would send thanksgiving letters, letters of request and the such to uhmm.. I don’t know, maybe intensify the intent of their prayers.

On a sweeter note though, these letters, for me, bring life to this religious gathering. The letters give us, church goers, an idea that we all live through circumstances and despite its negativity on our lives, we would still resort to Him.

The stories of success, on the other hand, give us hope. Say, when one passed the board exams, one could totally imagine how grateful he is when the priest reads his letter.

The Nobenaryo

The praises found inside the nobenaryo is nothing less than inspirational. My favorite one is the “Mother of Christ” that has a line that goes:

“when the voyage is o’er
o stand on the shore
and show Him at last to me”

My conscience knows how affected I am when I first read that line. I mean, It struck me even greater than the best Sugarfree ditty ever written. Life changing, indeed.

Browsing the other pages of the book may not give us the whole essence of Christianity but it definitely mirrors the great fate we, Catholics, must hold in times of joy and despair.

If you’re as old as me then there’s a chance that you wouldn’t be amused by the Kim Chiu + Gerald Anderson, Enchong Dee + Erich Gonzales love teams which now proliferates our good ‘ol television.

Okay, I might be called a hypocrite if I say that I was not persuaded by the tweetums tweetums.

But really, comparing these love teams to the love teams of the 90s is a no brainer. I could do nothing but to miss the countless hours spent on watching 90s love flicks.

Hey, I am a 90s guy and there’s nothing the children from ages 15 below could do about it.

So join me as I recollect my kilig- kiligan days, let’s all fall in love again:

Kevin Kosme and Ason Madamba (Home Along Da Riles)

A person who is not familiar with Home Along ‘Da Riles is definitely not a friend of mine.

Dolphy and Nova Villa were King and Queen of television (at least for me) of the 90s. Their uncanny ability to fuse comedy and love in a single act is one of a kind.

Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin

The Marvin Agustin – Jolina Magdangal love team has been very famous because of their partnership in numerous TV sitcoms, TV dramas and romantic-comedy movies. Their tandem started in the teen-oriented TV series Gimik in 1996. They starred in several hit movies, like Flames: The Movie (1997), Kung ayaw mo, huwag mo (1998), Labs kita… Okey ka lang (1998), Gimik: The Reunion (1999), and Labs ko si babes (2000).-wikipilipinas.org.

Vic Sotto and Cynthia Luster

See, I’m a huge Vic Sotto fan. And it all started when tons of his 90s movies were on cable TV. His movies were and still are epic which no Lastikman, Enteng Kabisote or any other 2000s movie of his could ever replace.

And when the bubbly personality of Cynthia Luster was added to the mix, one legend of a movie was created.

Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto

I remember My Dad when he strictly requires me to record each and every episode of Mula sa Puso on the proverbial VHS whenever he’s not home. My Dad’s a military officer, mind you.

And I think, because of that instance, I came to love Mula sa Puso from the bottom my heart.hehe. Mula sa Puso is the only teleserye I’ve watched from start to finish. Teleseryes can be manly too, I said to myself.

Bobby Andrews and Angelu de Leon

Bobby and Angelu were in tandem for seven movies in the 90s era alone making them one of the most visible and well loved couples in that time. A personal favorite of mine is “Wala na bang pagibig? which was released in 1997.

It’s not strange if Jaya’s voice comes into your mind.

Wowie de Guzman and Judy Ann Santos

Your TV must have some issues if you haven’t watched at least one flick of theirs.

Andre E + (Put any beautiful girl here)

Andrew E., when he still does comedy films, gives not so cute lads like me some kind of confidence.I mean, in all of his movies, he is paired with the materyales fuertes leading ladies. Great thing is, he’s no Piolo Pascual.

How I wish the 90s Philippine movie scene would come back.

The slapstick comedy, the not-so-technology-gyrated scenes, the very Pinoy dialogue, and the legendary actors are only some things the generation Y’zers have sorely missed.

What first comes into your mind when you see a person with a tattoo?

Freedom?

Coolness?

Independence?

Batangas City Jail?

When I see one, I always tell myself that I should also get one.

I think Miami and LA ink just got into me so badly and now I see tattoos as a form of art.

And I believe there’s nothing wrong with it.

My mom, in behalf of all the people that I know strongly negates it though.

They say tattoo is but a mere ugly stain etched on one’s body. That tattooed people can’t be hired for a decent position in the office.( unless you work for a tattoo parlor, of course)

Still, there would be tons and tons of reasons why one should NOT have a tattoo.

However, there are also a cupful of reasons why one SHOULD get one.

Though I think the aforementioned cupful would require open mindedness.

So open your minds ladies and gentlemen, here are the reasons why one should not be scared of having his skin uhmmm… modified by a tattoo artist.

1.	There are tattoo shops that are accredited by the DOH

The Department of Health certifies tattoo artists and shops that have sterilized tattooing tools and of course, an artist must attend a seminar on proper tattooing procedure.

This certainly lessens the fear of accumulating diseases via needle pricks.

2.	Tattoo is a part of Philippine Culture

Tattooing has been a part of Filipino tribal life since pre-Hispanic colonisation of the Philippine Islands,

When the Spanish first landed in the Philippine Islands, they were met by the tribal people of the Visayas, who had full body tattooing, the Spanish dubbed these Islands as “La Isla De Los Pintados” or “The Islands of the Painted Ones”. Tattooing in the Philippines is a tribal form of rank and accomplishments, some tribes believed that tattoos had magical qualities.

The more famous tattooed Filipino tribes where the tribal peoples of the mountains of North Luzon, especially among the Bontoc Igorot, Kalinga, and Ifugao peoples, which were infamous for Head-hunting. A tribal member received a tattoo (known as a “Chaklag”) which meant they have taken the head of an enemy tribe or warrior. There are many very different variations, traditions and styles of tattooing in the Philippines, most depend on the region and tribe they come from as each vary.– wikipedia.org

It may not sound as a lame excuse if you have ” I want to preserve a rich culture such as the Tattoo culture of the Philippines” as your reason, and if you mean what you say, that is.

3.	Tattoo as a form of independence

Tattoo is like a more brute version of cigarettes, I daresay. For when one is tattooed, he intensifies his identity. See, tattoos are not supposed to be just a bludgeon of ink on one’s skin.

Tattoos, I believe, are supposed to be bold statements of one’s views in life and are not merely for the aesthetics.

*****
See, one would not totally transform into a criminal ones he put on some ink on his skin.

Well, it’s true that some would have a tattoo just for showboating. However, “non-posers” would have them for a deeper reason that a closed mind would not even dare accomodate.

And so I lay here sitting infront of my laptop. The weather outside is as crappy as it gets.

Strong winds, thick fog, rains of carabaos and dinosaurs, and of course, with no one to keep me warm, man I really feel like mold.

Good thing though is I have, what I believe, a collection of good music to back my droney feelings up.

So here the songs I pop on Mr. Acer to turn me on on a gloomy day.

Loser by Beck

In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey
Butane in my veins and I’m out to cut the junkie
With the plastic eyeballs, spray paint the vegetables
Dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose

The words on this song are just pure stupidity. But then again, I feel the music, the laziness and all that crap when it rains. So yeah, a crappy song for a crappy day makes sense.

My Hero (acoustic version) by Foo Fighters

there goes my hero
watch him as he goes
there goes my hero
he’s ordinary

Dave Grohl is another genius lyricist. Rumors say that this song is for the late Kurt Cobain. If you have no idea of Kurt then kindly visit my residence and expect some intense bitch slapping.

1979 by Smashing Pumpkins

Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we’d never see an end to it all

Rainy days, ironic as it may sound, are one of the best instances to remember the giddiest of days. And this hit of Smashing Pumpkins is forever included in my “reminiscing” songs list.

Low Man’s Lyric by Metallica

So as I write to you
Of what is done and to do
Maybe you’ll understand
And won’t cry for this man
cause low man is due

This is one of the few lonely, down tempoed songs of the highly acclaimed metal outfit. And when James Hetfield makes a lonely song, he means a lonely song.

Aqueous Transmission by Incubus

I’m floating down a river
Oars freed from their holes long ago
Lying face up on the floor
Of my vessel
I marvel at the stars
And feel my heart overflow
Further down the river

Mike Einziger’ guitar work is dreamy in every sense of the word.

Shiver by Coldplay

So you know how much I need you
But you never even see me, do you?
And is this my final chance of getting you?

Coldplay’s Shiver is a chocful of emotions that are ready to fit any given gloomy day.

Sour Girl by Stone Temple Pilots

She turned away what was she lookin at?
She was a Sour Girl the day that she met me
Hey! What are you lookin at?
She was a happy girl when she left me

Watch the official MTV of this song and you’ll see the weirdest dancing a rockstar could ever perform. The vocal works of Scott Weiland is also spot on for a day with the greyest clouds.

Abot Kamay by The Dawn

Malapit ka sa paningin
Ngunit ika’y malayong abutin
Dalawang taong gustong kumawala
Sa gapos ng panahong nanunuya.

Jett Pangan’s voice here is as comforting as the other side of the pillow. This song, too, is a good one for the late hours of the night. If you’re alone, that is.

Moon River (cover) by Ebe Dancel

Moon River greatness + Warm voice of Ebe Dancel = orgasm for one week.

Idlip by Imago

A million tonight
A million to fight
A million to light
A million is right

The lyrics and the voice of Miss Aia is just right for the almost emo.

For my Dearly Departed by Franco

When I woke up it seems
Like my world was caving in
I won’t break down this time
I will be fine

Ocean waves serves as the song’s intro and outro. Solace is felt indeed.

Prayer by Kapatid

If I ever see you face to face again
I’ll ask you why so soon?
and in your grand debut from death
reborn again for life I pray

Karl Roy’s rugged voice appears to be a very psychedelic one in this mid-tempoed song of the now defunct Kapatid.

We Give in Sometimes by Up Dharma Down

This, for me, is the song of surrender.

Wanted Bedspacer by Ely Buendia

The perfect song for the persons who lack human warmth.

…..
Yes, they might be sad songs, but some of them would not produce tears but would rather be founts of wisdom and inspiration.

So yes, feel the lonesome when your environment suggests. There’s nothing wrong with being lonely after all.

Rainy days are just preparation for the sunny ones, so to speak.
