I am undeniably a fan and I find no Willie Revillame, APO, Rico Puno or anyone of the noontime show hosts as Tito, Vic and Joey’s (TVJ’s) equivalent.

Now we all know how great hosts and actors they are. We also know how the triumvirate’s witty spunk could make our day.

However, in this article, let us talk about their song parodies which now treads the WOWBatangas home like wildfire courtesy of Alva’s external speakers.

Their songs, which delve on comic takes on maniacal deeds, gay love, poverty and improper hygiene, have been listened to by Pinoys long before my parents met.

They’ve been wrecking (in a good way, that is) songs—local and foreign alike since their Discorama days which date back as early as the 70s.

Song wrecking, as I poorly remember in one article of Joey de Leon (my memory really escapes me here), is defined as their manner of changing the lyrics of a certain song and leaving it with a TVJ blueprint.

I believe they have never lost rapport to the masas since then thanks to their dark green jokes and bading-badingans which are beautifully fused in each of their ditties.

Although I have to say that Bossing Vic’s breezy pipes are always a standout whenever he does the lead or the second voice duties. And whenever his voice segues into the kabadingan, severe LSS takes place.

Joey de Leon, on the other hand, has uhmm… diminutive singing prowess and he rather makes it up with the kabadingan effect. Joey, I believe, is also the genius behind the lyrics.

Tito Sotto also gets his fare share of verses. It seems that the joy of seeing his two comrades making total badings out of themselves is enjoyable enough as his voice seems to be the hardest to recognize (he sounds like Vic but not quite).

And my generation is fortunate enough to be provided with youtube videos of their greatness.

Dance, in the olden times, is a ritual of sorts.

Olden people dance for thanksgiving, for offering, for praying and for other symbolic ceremonies.

Obviously, dance has evolved into something more liberating.

From the rituals to the boogies to the sways to the macarenas and to the dougies of today, dancing has indeed transcended into heights which nobody from the 1920s could ever imagine.

Today, especially in the Philippine dance scene, dance steps could only become popular when it’s accompanied by catchy and rhythmic tunes.

Such is the case of Cali Swag’s Teach Me How To Dougie. Now, I don’t know how to do the dougie and also do not know what in earth is a dougie.

But thanks to its catchy and rhythmic beats, I am disturbed for at least two weeks (my 4 year old niece is doing the dougie).

We have to blame Spain’s Los Del Rio about this dance craze that still haunts us to date. Indeed, 1995-1996 were the years of the:

But we never heard of Los Del Rio since then.

The UMD (that’s Universal Motion Dancers to you who lives under a rock) has been lifted onto greater heights and they have the Butterfly Dance Step to dedicate their eternal thank yous.

The moonwalk became popular around the world after Michael Jackson did it during a live performance of the phenomenal “Billie Jean” sometime in 1983.

Only a chosen few or uhmm… a chosen many could imitate it. And unfortunately, I am not one of them.

Bayani Agbayani is a genius, he made my uber- conservative high school crush gyrate her hips via this dance frenzy. Minor thanks to the Tae Bo class.

My parents danced to this ditty on a Christmas party some 10 years ago. I came home early that evening, I remember.

Papaya Dance
Mr. Manzano is the man when he does this song. I mean, the half serious face, the gyrating hips— he was definitely the ladies’ (and non-ladies’) man.

Dance may not be a sacred activity anymore, and it is just okay, I guess. I mean, we could all get along with the changing times just fine.

I just wonder what dance steps would the people think of in the next one hundred years to come.

Even bearded, mustached, beer bellied men like I get lonely sometimes and would almost cry to songs that my feelings could relate to.

SA WAKAS (album) by Sugarfree

Sugarfree’s debut album is my favorite OPM album of all time. I mean, Ebe Dancel’s song writing is Godly. Also, the melody lines and arrangement of songs are insanely beautiful.

My favorite singles in this favorite album of mine are:

It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over by Lenny Kravitz

Though technically it’s not a love song, in case you live under a rock, Black Sabbath is one of the pioneers of Heavy Metal. But the line that goes “living just for dying, dying just for you” could readily fit any given WestLife ditty.

The breezy vocal works of Jay Durias eases any heartbroken mood.

All I Want is You Today, Ikaw Nga, Half Crazy; I mean, I could still name a number of songs by Soutborder and realize how bittersweet our days could be. Their songs may not be that macho, but still, if you have the balls to absorb the lyrics then there’s nothing wrong with it.

There goes my list. And I know yours may not be the same as mine. But hey! I think you’d agree with me that songs are very effective meds when our hearts encounter complications.

It’s undeniable that one’s mood would be a lighter one once he strums or plucks that good ol’ six stringed acoustic.

Now, what song did you first play with the guitar?

My “learning the guitar pieces”, if I remember it right, are Nirvana’s “About A Girl” and “A Horse With No Name” by America (the band) and of course a couple of Eraserheads’ hits.

Moreover, there would always be a song that could fit one’s feelings. So guitar playing, given its not-so- complicatedness, may well be considered as everybody’s cup of tea.

A guitar virtuoso specializes in a certain field like the lead, bass and the rhythm guitars and he may have a specific guitar to effectively play his role in a band.

And here are the characteristics of each:

Lead- a lead guitarist plays melody lines, instrumental fill passages, guitar solos, and occasionally, some riffs within a song structure. The lead is the featured guitar, which usually plays single-note-based lines ordouble-stops.

In rock, heavy metal, blues, jazz, punk, fusion, some pop, and other music styles, lead guitar lines are usually supported by a second guitarist who plays rhythm guitar, which consists of accompaniment chordsand riffs, often played with a distortion effect.—Wikipedia.org

Ian Umali (P.O.T.), Manuel Legarda (Wolfgang), Francis Reyes (The Dawn), Perf De Castro (Rivermaya), Jack Rufo (Neocoulours) played anthemic guitar solos many times in their music careers. Darius Semana (Parokya ni Edgar), MataasnaKahoy’s very own, plays simple yet very effective riffs all throughout his band’s discography.

Bass- is normally a four or five string guitar which plays low and droning notes. Also, the Bass is said to be the backbone of any song.

A bassist’s playing should always be in cohesion with that of the drummer’s for the song’s groove to be solidified.

One of the more notable bassists in the Philippine music scene is Mally Paraguya (P.O.T.) Ricci Gurango (Barbie Almalbis) and Buddy Zabala (Eraserheads, The Dawn).

Rhythm- a guitar that provides rhythmic chordal accompaniment for a singer or other instruments in band or any other musical ensmble- wikipedia.org. It is the second guitar, so to speak. Second to the lead, that is. (the Bass is on a league of its own)

Ebe Dancel (Sugarfree, Cambio) efficiently and effectively plays rythm for his bands.

But we here at the WOWBatangas home like it warm. We prefer Reinier’s acoustic playing over any other mind boggling electric guitar raucous . Pair it with Miss Gerlie’s voice and JR’s or Alva’s beats on the cajon then the proverbial stress would surely be lessened, if not thrown outside the window.

Upon mastering the basics of the guitar, I learned that it also is a good tool to impress the ladies. The single ladies, that is. So guitar is, indeed, a need for those hopeless romantics out there. The sweetest “OO” may not be that elusive if you have some decent guitar playing to back it up.

For Adults Only: the Real Noise amid Music

I’m not into loud, hardcore music. Really. But I enjoy occasionally listening to System of a Down, Cradle of Filth, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Silverstein and the likes when I’m in the mood for some heavy sound.

I was in this kind of mood when my mom saw me headbanging to the beat of Sum 41’s Still Waiting. It wasn’t that hardcore but my mom overreacted as if she caught me smoking crack. That may even be an understatement.

Of course I understood her when she related that kind of music to rebellion, drug addiction and the usual negative misconceptions towards it because people her age usually think that way – which was only natural. It did not even bother me when she stood that that was not music but destructive noise.

Actually, that remained the case until she heard my sister’s scandalously loud message alert tone and danced to the beat of Rihanna’s S and M. I nearly puked. Talk about real hardcore music, I thought.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me. That was a line from Rihanna’s hit which made my mother boogey, unmindful of its meaning. S and M. Sodomasochism. As if the title wasn’t obscene enough, Rihanna took the liberty of elaborating it further through its lyrics. Clearly explained, I must say.

Then, as if the words they sing of weren’t understandable enough, enter the artists who went pretty straightforward like Enrique Iglesias in his song Tonight (I’m F***ing You), Katy Perry in her debut hit, I Kissed a Girl and Kanye West in his rap part in a Katy Perry song, Extraterrestrial among a handful others. Sad but this is the kind of music you’ll hear more often over radio stations and music channels. You tell me. Aren’t these songs more alarming than those heavy metal songs your grandmother warned you about?

Despite our inherent ability to spot the negative sides of things, we seem to have this innate inability to hear the negative lines of some songs.

If you think this kind of songs only exist in the international music scene, you probably don’t listen to local FM stations. I could still recall this OPM song entitled Banana which was a parody of Akon’s year-old hit, Right Now (Na Na Na). Upon hearing its lines, you’d perfectly know that this didn’t really pertain to a long, yellow, tropical fruit but to something which Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) thought was malicious, enough reason for them to condemn it from hitting the airwaves for months. Long live CBCP.

I stand neither for the heavy metal rockstars, nor its sound. I stand for morality. I stand for awareness amongst listeners. I stand for the good of the younger audience.

With this kind of songs topping the charts these days, I worry morality will no longer hit the notes in the music scene. I hope not.

Maria’s Born This Way cover via a video uploaded on YouTube has earned 10,156,696 views and counting. With the power of multimedia and the magnetic sharing of videos on social networks, Maria Aragon suddenly became an Internet star.

On February 17, via Lady Gaga’s Twitter account, I suppose every follower of the ‘Mother Monster’ have checked out the link she posted — Maria Aragon’s video of her singing the pop star’s Born This Way single. Lady Gaga shared she can’t stop crying while watching the video and stated that Maria reminded her why she wrote the song and why she make music.

And on Maria’s guesting on Winnipeg radio station Hot 103, Lady Gaga surprised her via phone patch and even gave her a bigger surprise when the multi-awarded artist invited Maria to sing with her a duet of Born This Way on the former’s concert in Toronto.

Maria’s parents are both Filipinos but the 10-year-old talented girl has never been to the Philippines. Watch Maria Aragon’s Born This Way cover below. See how adorable the newly dubbed ‘Little Monster’ is.
